Halo Infinite Confirms December 14th Release Date For Fiesta & Slayer

Halo Infinite will soon be adding much-requested playlists to its multiplayer, with Slayer, Fiesta, SWAT and Free-For-All coming on December 14. The official launch week for Halo Infinite has been a successful one for developer 343 Industries. Halo Infinite won the Players' Voice award at The Game Awards on December 9, the only nomination it had at the event - as well as the only award at the event decided entirely by fan vote.

Originally launching as a surprise beta on November 15, Halo Infinite's free-to-play multiplayer was met with overall praise with regards to its gameplay, but greedy monetization practices and poor battle pass design led to a strong outcry from fans that quickly boiled over. Attacks on 343 Industries got so toxic that the Halo subreddit was temporarily locked down, freezing the ability to post for a full 24 hours. General discourse has calmed since then, with 343 Industries making it clear that improving multiplayer is a top priority.

In a post on the Halo subreddit, 343 Industries Community Director Ske7ch (via IGN) detailed a major update to the game's multiplayer, with multiple new playlists to be added via a December 14 patch. The playlists include Free-For-All, Fiesta, Tactical Slayer (formerly SWAT), and the much-requested Slayer. The Slayer playlist will feature just a basic Team Deathmatch mode, as it was noted "the team's original plans for a Slayer playlist included a variety of new variants that weren't going to be ready in time to deploy before the holiday break." Fiesta is the only returning playlist coming as part of the update, as it originally saw its debut as part of the first week of Halo Infinite's Fracture: Tenrai event.

Perhaps the most interesting section of the update details adjustments coming to the current challenge system in the game. Currently, apart from the recently adjusted XP earned simply for playing matches, the only way to level up the battle pass (for Infinite's first season) is to complete a series of random challenges.  Some of these challenges have been noted for their difficulty or their single-focused nature, such as earning kills with a particular weapon or vehicle. Now, Halo Infinite will be adding challenges based on accumulated player score, which Ske7ch noted as "a small initial step towards 'performance based XP.'"

The multiplayer update is just one part of the quickly-growing Halo universe. After years of speculation, a new trailer for a live-action Halo series on Paramount+ finally made its debut just one day after the launch of Halo Infinite's campaign. The campaign has seen stellar reviews, being lauded for its new take on Halo gameplay while advancing the series' plot in a significant way. For both the fans and for its developers, things are looking positive for the future of Halo Infinite.
