Warning! Spoilers ahead for Amazing Spider-Man: King's Ransom #1
Even with Spider-Man's constant costume changes in Marvel history, he never strays from his classic red and blue costume for too long. 2020 saw the introduction of a new suit from Threats and Menaces, a tabloid news network hosted by Norah Winters and J. Jonah Jameson. Fans almost unanimously disliked the new costume because Peter Parker "sold out" to cheap journalism and J. Jonah Jameson's theatrics.
From the Daily Bugle headlines to the podcasts in the Spider-Man PlayStation games, J. Jonah Jameson has always referred to Spider-Man as a "menace." Their relationship changed in recent comics, however. In The Amazing Spider-Man #61, by Nick Spencer and Patrick Gleason, Jameson and Spider-Man work together using the new Threats and Menaces (TnM) costume. The costume ditches Spider-Man's old colors and uses whites, grays, oranges, and navy blues. Peter's TnM suit augments his strength and speed, but everything he sees is sent directly to the desk of J. Jonah Jameson, which, of course, stirred up lots of controversies.
Even though most people don't like the narrative decisions based on the costume, it was never actually that bad in black and white— it definitely has potential. One of the most critically successful Spider-Man suits in recent years, especially for its color scheme, is the Advanced Suit from the PlayStation games. A Reddit user named PunkieDudie recolored the scorned TnM suit with the colors of Spider-Man's PlayStation attire. The palette is more traditional, with the supplemental white spider emblem on Pete's chest. Fans generally thought it was a great fix, showing once again how fans have the power to correct what they deem to be professional mistakes.
Thankfully, Spider-Man is back to his classic costume, which will probably always be his primary outfit. In Spencer and Rogê Antonio's Amazing Spider-Man: King's Ransom #1, Peter has to make a difficult choice. Although Spider-Man and J. Jonah Jameson's relationship has healed in recent years, Peter sacrificed this progress, returning to his independent superhero life. Sometimes the most difficult choice is the right one. He ends his partnership with J. Jonah Jameson, Threats & Menaces, and Norah Winters, but Peter once again has the freedom to do the right thing.
Reddit's u/PunkieDudie proves that fans shouldn't just disregard flaws. Generally criticized superhero costumes, with a few simple tweaks, have the chance to turn into fan-favorite outfits. Even if Spider-Man constantly reverts to his classic suit, this doesn't stop both fans and creators from designing new costumes for Marvel Comics.
