Fantastic Beasts 3 Theory: Credence is Possessed by Ariana's Obscurus

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore will likely explore more of Credence's history as a Dumbledore and possibly get into Credence's origins as an obscurial; but what if Credence is actually possessed by Ariana Dumbledore's obscurus? Fantastic Beasts 3 has gotten Harry Potter fans hungry for the latest installment to J.K. Rowling's wildly popular Wizarding World universe. The author has added a lot of new magical information to the canon of the universe, such as obscurials, maledictus', blood pacts, and the wizarding worlds outside of Great Britain. The introduction of these elements connects the timelines of Harry Potter and Fantastic Beastsevents.

Fantastic Beasts 2 left off with the revelation that Credence (Ezra Miller) is actually Aurelius Dumbledore after initially believing that he was a descendant of the Lestrange family. Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) asks Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) to intervene with Grindelwald's (Johnny Depp) plans and discloses to Newt that he cannot fight Grindelwald directly due to a blood pact the two formed when they were young. After Queenie (Alison Sudol) is coerced into Grindelwald's movement, probably the most difficult loss in the series thus far, Jacob (Dan Fogler) vows to follow Newt to get Queenie back. With Tina Goldstein (Katherine Waterson) at Newt's side, a new trio is formed and adventure beckons them into the third chapter of the series.

With the title reveal of the upcoming film, fans of the books are curious about how much will be re-hashed from Dumbledore's detailed past laid out in the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows novel. Many wonder if Grindelwald's revelation to Credence is a lie, which isn't that far-fetched of an opinion. As well, one of the greatest enigmas of the Dumbledore family history is the mysterious death of Albus' younger sister Ariana, and Grindelwald's involvement. With all of the new information about obscurus', obscurials, and with the focus on Dumbledore's secrets being the plot of the new film, it's completely within the realm of possibility that Credence is actually being possessed by Ariana Dumbledore's obscurial. Here's why.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows chronicles a ton of Dumbledore's past when Rita Skeeter writes a posthumous biography about the Hogwarts headmaster titled "The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore". The condemning tell-all book does feature a surprising amount of truth about Albus' life and his controversial family. Albus' younger sister Ariana is assaulted by a group of muggle boys at a very young age, their father Percival retaliates which results in his life imprisonment in Azkaban. Ariana is never the same again and suppresses her magical powers, leading to "fits". After a particularly nasty tantrum, Ariana accidentally kills their mother Kendra Dumbledore and Albus is sent back to take care of his sister and younger brother Aberforth. Back at the Dumbledore home in Godric's Hollow is where Albus meets Grindelwald for the first time.

The books never really expound upon Ariana's death. What was revealed in the novels is that Grindelwald, Aberforth, and Albus get into a heated argument, curses are fired and Ariana dies. Fantastic Beasts explains the origin of an obscurus through Credence by elucidating that suppression of magical powers leads to a destructive magical force possessing the host. If Ariana was suppressing her magic after the attack then it is highly likely that she has an obscurus. As well, her fits were dangerous enough to kill her own mother and possibly herself. The destructive power of an obscurus is outlined in Fantastic Beasts as Credence wreaks havoc on New York, killing many No-Majs (or Muggles) and destroying entire blocks. Fantastic Beasts also gave away another important fact about obscurus' which supports this theory.

After Jacob goes into Newt Scamander's suitcase for the first time, he encounters an obscurus floating ominously in the snowy tundra. Newt warns Jacob to back off from the dangerous parasitic entity and explains that the obscurus was extracted from a young Sudanese girl and kept in a magical bubble for further study. Later, Graves (Colin Farrell) aka Grindelwald in disguise takes the obscurus from Newt's case and attempts to frame him for Credence's destruction.

If Newt Scamander, an inherently good wizard, is able to perform complicated magic like extracting an obscurus from the host then there's no question that Grindelwald would be able to as well. Though removing and obscurus may not technically be dark magic, it is worth noting that Grindelwald was kicked out of Durmstrang due to his exploits in the dark arts. The fact that an obscurus can be taken away from the obscurial opens up the possibility that Credence, or Aurelius, is actually being possessed by someone else's. Not only that, but Credence's obscurus is markedly more powerful than any that the wizarding world has encountered before. Since the magical force is considered parasitic, that means it cannot grow outside of a host. If Ariana's obscurus was taken out and put into Credence, that would allow the obscurus to grow and become exponentially potent.

Harry Potter fans are not excited about the bait-and-switch ending of Fantastic Beasts 2 and the idea that Credence is somehow related to the Dumbledore family. Grindelwald is a master manipulator and primarily flexes his power through his ability to persuade others. Thus, the theory that Grindelwald lied to Credence about being a Dumbledore has plenty of merits. Suppose that Grindelwald is lying, that brings up the question of the Dumbledore family phoenix going willingly to Credence. The only way that can be explained is if Credence hosts Ariana's obscurus. Phoenixes possess many mysterious magical powers, and it is possible that Fawkes can sense Ariana's presence dwelling in Credence. Since Grindelwald was a strong figure in Albus' life prior to the series, this brings another prospect to the forefront that supports the theory that Credence is a temporary home for Ariana's obscurus.

J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter novels confirm that Grindelwald was present at the time of Ariana's death. Grindelwald's idea of revealing the wizarding world, therefore making Muggles subservient to wizards, was once shared by Albus Dumbledore. Grindelwald and Dumbledore worked tirelessly on bringing this idea to fruition, angering Albus' younger brother Aberforth. After Aberforth had enough a fight broke out, in which Ariana was caught in the middle. Grindelwald fled the scene immediately, but who is to say the obscurus didn't go with him.

While it is loosely spoken of in the novels, what the fight was about exactly isn't clear. Being a huge part of Albus' life at this time means that Grindelwald would have been well-acquainted with Ariana, her obscurus, and the destructive powers that it held. Grindelwald is obviously using Credence and his obscurus for their immense power, so it's not unexpected that Grindelwald would have been planning the same fate for Ariana. Grindelwald's plans on harnessing the obscurus as a weapon against detractors and Muggles is highly likely, though yet to be seen.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is almost certainly going to get into the intricacies of the Dumbledore family, Albus' past, and will hopefully reveal information that isn't discussed in the books. Given everything that is already known about the wizarding family and Grindelwald's role, there's a strong likelihood that Credence is being possessed by Ariana Dumbledore's obscurus. Especially when one considers the fact that Grindelwald had the means, motive, and opportunity to extract the obscurus and harness its deadly power for horrors yet unknown.
