Doc Ock Accidentally Mocks The MCU's Spider-Man Changes

Doc Ock in the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer just accidentally mocked the MCU Spider-Man changes. In the second trailer, the iconic villain Doctor Octopus comments, "you're not Peter Parker," as he holds Tom Holland's Spider-Man in his clutches during a confrontation. While this line serves to confirm that this Doc Ock (played by Alfred Molina) is the one from Spider-Man 2, it also serves (in a meta sense) as sort of a playful diss on the MCU's depiction of the wall-crawler.

In the trailer, viewers get further confirmation regarding which villains will be returning. Building off the brief teases in the first trailer, the second one delivers the first full looks at Green Goblin, Electro, Sandman, and the Lizard. Meanwhile, Ock has a more prominent presence that details his apparent role in the film. As opposed to being a full-on villain, he seems to be a reluctant ally of Spider-Man, complete with him apparently taking on Electro. Ock working with Spider-Man shows that this version is the same as the Raimi films and will likely serve to build upon his redemption that happened at the end of Spider-Man 2.

Aside from the more literal confirmation that Ock's line in the trailer brings, it also mocks the changes the MCU has made to Spider-Man. A common criticism many have had about Tom Holland's take on the character is that he has basically been Iron Man 2.0 up until this point. Ock's line essentially (if unintentionally) validates those criticisms to an extent.

In Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man spends the majority of the film trying to prove himself as an Avenger to Tony Stark. Though the film effectively builds upon the bond between Peter and Tony in Captain America: Civil War, the insistence on trying to prove himself to the latter takes away from Peter trying to be a small-town hero in New York. Even after his death in Avengers: Endgame, Peter still remains stuck in Tony's shadow.

Spider-Man: Far From Home shows Peter trying to live up to Tony's legacy as Iron Man, even going so far as to proclaim he is failing at becoming the next Iron Man. The film attempts to step out of this by including the talk Peter has with Happy, where the latter essentially claims that he can never be like Tony and should not think he needs to. However, this scene is ultimately undercut by the following moment where Peter constructs his new suit while listening to AC/DC's "Back In Black," essentially making another comparison to Iron Man.

Of course, there is likely no intention in Ock's line to suggest Spider-Man: No Way Home is a self-referential mocking of the MCU's interpretation of Spider-Man. However, the fact that it's there is likely to induce some chuckles from viewers, particularly those who have been critical of the overt Iron Man parallels. In addition to the line, it seems that the film is set to have Peter truly come into his own as Spider-Man if his conflict with Dr. Strange is anything to go by. Even without the Doc Ock line, it appears the MCU is set to address those criticisms.
