DC’s Version of Deadpool Hints He’s Getting His Own Movie

Warning! Spoilers for Suicide Squad #9

According to the DC Universe’s version of Deadpool, “Ambush Bug,” he might be getting his own movie. At the rate that Warner Bros. is bringing obscure characters into film, he could end up being right.

In the past few years, several DC heroes and villains have made their big screen debut. Although many of them are not widely known, obscurity hasn’t prevented them from receiving live action iterations. With Deadpool’s proven success in Fox’s Marvel movies, DC is lacking in the field of meta comedy. However, the DC Universe has a wide selection of characters that fill the void, including Bat-Mite, Mr. Mxyzptlk, and the often neglected Ambush Bug. The strange green teleporting superhero might have big things coming up, as referenced in Suicide Squad #9, written by Robbie Thompson with art by Dexter Soy.

The self-admittedly strange superhero Ambush Bug refers to himself as “future Hollywood royalty,” hinting at a movie appearance down the road. In the midst of a dramatic confrontation, he can’t help but break the fourth wall. Ambush Bug has already referenced real world pop culture, with Bo Burnham’s Netflix special Inside recently getting a shoutout of sorts. He’s also given a nod to Amalgam Comics, the mashup imprint between A-list Marvel Comics and DC Comics heroes. At one point, Ambush Bug even gave a passing mention to the upcoming HBO Max Peacekeeper series.

It might seem like a stretch for a hero like Ambush Bug to make his way into a live action movie based on comic book dialogue, but there is precedent for such a thing. James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad already proved there’s a space for quirky characters like Ambush Bug, and at the pace that HBO Max is green lighting projects involving DC heroes, it could just be a matter of time. Although Ambush Bug can be self-deluded, at the very least, his confidence could channel writer Robbie Thompson’s hope for the character’s future.

There aren’t many other meta heroes currently being published in the DC Universe, giving the self-aware superhero an advantage if WB were to choose to bring such humor into the movies. With his expanded role in comics just within the past year, issues are practically campaigning for an adaptation. Since there isn’t a whole lot of connective tissue in DC’s movie repertoire, appearances from Ambush Bug might be the glue that they’re missing.
