Edgar Wright kicked off his Three Flavors Cornetto Trilogy and established himself, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost as the 21st century’s foremost genre spoofers with Shaun of the Dead, the greatest blend of horror and comedy since An American Werewolf in London. The movie’s main strength is that it pokes fun at zombie movies while being a prime example of one, and it would function as a better-than-average romantic comedy if it didn’t feature the undead at all.
Pegg and Frost’s real-life friendship created an on-screen pairing for the ages. Shaun and Ed were the perfect roles to exemplify the duo’s chemistry.
10 Shaun: “How’s That For A Slice Of Fried Gold?”
When it becomes apparent to Shaun and Ed that their house isn’t a safe place to ride out the apocalypse, Shaun runs through a few possible plans that involve rescuing Liz and Barbara before settling on the Winchester as a lockdown spot.
Shaun says, “How’s that for a slice of fried gold?” Ed stands, says, “Yeah, boy!” and clinks his weapon of choice (a shovel) against Shaun’s weapon of choice (a cricket bat).
9 Ed: “You’ve Got Red On You.”
This line is repeated a few times throughout Shaun of the Dead. First, Shaun is told he’s got red on him when his red pen leaks into the pocket of his white shirt.
Then, when he beats a zombie to death with a cricket bat and gets splattered with their blood, Ed tells him again, “You’ve got red on you.”
8 Shaun: “I Did Not Call Diane A Failed Actress!”
When Shaun is apologizing to Liz and offers to hang out with her and her friends, she says, “You, hang out with my friends? A failed actress and a tw*t?” Shaun says the insults are “a bit harsh,” and Liz says, “Your words, Shaun!” He objects: “I did not call Diane a failed actress!” – but he did call David a “tw*t,” and with good reason.
Diane’s acting abilities come in handy later in the movie when the survivors need to impersonate the undead to get through the horde outside the Winchester.
7 Ed: “Who Died And Made You F***ing King Of The Zombies?”
Shaun and Ed are the best of friends, but their relationship isn’t totally perfect. Just as Pete represents Shaun’s ambitious drive, Ed represents the immaturity holding him back.
When Ed practices his fake zombie performance, Shaun criticizes his take on the role and Ed says, “Who died and made you f***ing king of the zombies?”
6 Shaun: “F***-A-Doodle-Doo!”
Balancing genres perfectly, Shaun of the Dead uses horror to prevent the comedy from making the tone too light and uses comedy to lighten the mood when terror threatens to take over entirely.
When the zombies break into the pub and Shaun and Ed’s chances of survival are dwindling, Pete’s naked undead corpse meanders through the door and Ed says, “Hey, Shaun, look who it is,” and Shaun cries out, “F***-a-doodle-doo!”
5 Ed: “I’m Sorry, Shaun.”
When Shaun is telling Ed that he needs to keep the house tidy, Ed says, “I’m sorry, Shaun.” Shaun says it’s okay, but Ed insists, “No, I’m sorry, Shaun.” And then Shaun smells what Ed is apologizing for.
Ed tells Shaun, “I’ll stop doing it when you stop laughing.” This sets up a poignant moment at the end of the movie when Shaun is about to leave Ed in the pub.
4 Shaun: “He’s Got An Arm Off!”
While a reporter on the news is telling viewers to make sure that all of their doors and windows are securely locked, a zombie can be seen shuffling through the front door, which Shaun and Ed left open – again.
As he comes through into the living room, Shaun and Ed are horrified to see an armless groomsman trying to feast on their brains. Shaun cries out, “Oh, for God’s sake, he’s got an arm off!”
3 Ed: “... And Then Your Mum Rang Back ...”
One of the many things about Ed that bothers Pete is that he only takes down his own phone messages while Shaun and Pete are at work.
After Shaun tells Ed about this, he starts taking his messages. He tells him, “Well, your mum rang about you going around tomorrow night, and then Liz rang about the two of you eating out tonight ..." He then completely messes up and goes into a little bit too much detail regarding Shaun's mom and what he thought he had said.
2 Shaun: “What’s The Matter, David? Never Taken A Shortcut Before?”
This quote set up one of the most hysterical running gags in the Cornetto Trilogy. Shaun takes the group of survivors into a backyard to cut through to the Winchester, where they find that there’s a long row of fences to climb over.
David objects and Shaun quips, “What’s the matter, David? Never taken a shortcut before?” Then, he tries to vault the first fence and it falls over.
1 Ed: “C**k It!”
In the opening scene, when Ed is struggling with a fruity machine a few feet away from Shaun and Liz’s heartfelt discussion about their relationship, he yells out, “C**k it!”
He repeats this line a few times throughout the movie, like when Shaun can’t figure out how to load the Winchester rifle. It’s a very applicable quote to express annoyance.
