Borat 2: Release Date, Cast & Story Details | Screen Rant

Actor and comedian Sacha Baron Cohen is resurrecting his signature character Borat Sagdiyev for Borat 2, a sequel to the hit 2006 movie. First introduced as a character on Cohen's Da Ali G Show, Borat hails from Kazakhstan, or at least a wildly offensive caricature of that country. Borat is a racist, sexist, homophobic person, and is objectively pretty terrible. Yet, as a fictional character, he's oddly charming, if only because he often doesn't seem to have any understanding why what he thinks is upsetting.

The real genius of Borat, as seen multiple times in the 2006 film, is how his prejudices can serve to let the guard down of the people he interacts with, exposing just how bigoted they might be in reality. In that way, Borat becomes a prime conduit for social satire, shining a spotlight on the very real prejudices present in so much of American culture. Although those looking for less high-brow laughs can also watch Borat for fights between two naked men and attempts to kidnap Pamela Anderson.

Now, 14 years after Borat became a movie star, Cohen is returning the character to the feature film realm, albeit not the big screen. Instead, Borat will make his streaming movie debut. Here's what we know so far.

After more than a decade with only sporadic TV appearances by Borat, fans were shocked in early September 2020 by the surprise reveal that Sacha Baron Cohen was not only working on a Borat 2, but that it had already been filmed in secret. To say that no one had been anticipating a potential Borat sequel's arrival would be an understatement.

In late September 2020, it was confirmed that Amazon Studios had acquired the rights to Borat 2, which has yet to be officially titled, but is rumored to sport the insanely long moniker Borat: Gift of Pornographic Monkey to Vice Premiere Mikhael Pence to Make Benefit Recently Diminished Nation of Kazakhstan. As one might imagine, the sequel is planned to debut on the Amazon Prime streaming service, skipping theaters. Considering the Coronavirus situation though, that's probably for the best. Amazon plans to release Borat 2 in late October, shortly before the U.S. presidential election between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, but an exact date hasn't been announced yet.

Outside of Sacha Baron Cohen returning as Borat himself, no other cast members for the film have been confirmed. One assumes Ken Davitian might return as Borat's producer Azamat, and possibly Pamela Anderson as Borat's unrequited love. Considering Cohen's track record, it's also likely some American political figures will appear, possibly unaware of what they're taking part in.

There's been little revealed about what kind of craziness Cohen put together for Borat 2, but it's been reported that the sequel will figure in how well-known Borat is now, and will see the odd scenario of Cohen playing Borat playing Cohen, so basically Borat in disguise. It's a strange setup, but if anyone can pull it off, it's Cohen, who is said to have placed himself in real physical danger on multiple occasions during production.
