The Detour Season 1 Recap | Screen Rant

Catching up on comedy series The Detour? Here’s a season 1 recap. TBS comedy The Detour is the brainchild of husband/wife duo and former Daily Show correspondents Jason Jones and Samantha Bee. Jones also stars as Nate Parker who along with his wife Robin (Natalie Zea, Justified) and their preteen twins Delilah (Ashley Gerasimovich, Louie) and Jared (Liam Carroll, Angie Tribeca) find themselves on the road trip from Hell when Nate decides they’re going to drive to his work conference in Fort Lauderdale, Florida from their home in Syracuse, New York rather than fly.

Throughout The Detour season 1, the Parkers face just about every setback a road trip can throw at them. While car trouble and delays are to be expected, accidentally taking their kids to a strip club they thought was a roadside ice cream shop - to be fair it was called the Banana Creamery - and wrongfully spending a day in a drunk tank probably wasn’t what Nate had in mind when he embarked on the trip.

In The Detour season 1’s fourth episode “The Restaurant” the Parkers visited another dodgy roadside attraction – a culturally insensitive eatery called Conquistadors. The Spanish conquest-themed tourist trap came complete with twerking Aztecs and bad oysters which gave the family food poisoning, and led to a two-episode arc that saw the Parkers take refuge at a B&B run by a seemingly genteel Southern gentleman named Dr. Rob (Tom Amandes). That particular delay resulted in Robin – an ordained-by-internet minister – unwittingly agree to marry Rob and his 16-year-old Russian mail-order bride.

Throughout The Detour season 1, it’s teased as to why Nate forced this disastrous road trip on his family. Flashbacks to Nate’s place of work PFR Industries and flashforwards to him being interrogated by the Feds gradually reveals the family patriarch has stolen a product developed by his company that he believes is dangerous, and colluded with journalist Billy Evans (Taylor Kowalski, Snowfall) – who is really a lifestyle blogger – to expose them. After challenging his boss Gene (Phil Reeves, Veep), Nate got fired and is dragging along his family to his work conference to blow the whistle on PFR.

In the final episodes of The Detour season 1, it’s finally revealed the mystery product was a hand sanitizer that Nate found out was dangerous to humans. In the season finale, the Parkers have finally arrived in Fort Lauderdale and Nate is about to reveal the truth at the conference. Just as Nate is about to go into full-on whistleblowing mode, blogger Billy pops up and does the job for him only to find out that the hand sanitizer is, in fact, a doorknob sanitizer and therefore totally fine. Bullet dodged before he could humiliate himself, Nate and his family finally head off to the beach for some much-deserved relaxation.

The Detour’s first season wasn’t quite done there, however. A last-minute plot twist revealed the Feds who were seemingly interrogating Nate throughout the season were actually interested in Robin who had apparently gone by many different aliases. More of Robin’s mysterious past would be revealed in The Detour season 2.
