Wheel Of Time Teases Moiraine's Secret Connection To Rand

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Wheel of Time season 1, episode 6.

Moiraine’s royal family reveal in The Wheel of Time episode 6 is tied to Rand’s secret backstory in Robert Jordan’s books. While both characters are from different worlds, there are connections between their respective families in the source material. However, it may be a while before this link is explored.

Wheel of Time season 1, episode 6, titled “The Flame of Tar Valon”, dove a bit deeper into Rosamund Pike’s character and her mission to find the Dragon Reborn. Just as it was in the books, the show has confirmed that Moiraine conspired with the Amyrlin Seat, Siuan Sanche (Sophie Okonedo), to discover the truth about the Dragon Reborn’s identity. Unbeknownst to her sisters at the White Tower, finding the Dragon Reborn has been her primary objective for a number of years.

Another important detail about Moiraine’s past was dropped when Wheel of Time's Amyrlin Seat made note of her “noble blood” and spoke the character’s full name, Moiraine Damodred. This is a clear reference to Moiraine’s royal heritage. In the books, Moiraine is a member of House Damodred, the family line that rules the kingdom of Cairhien. Cairhien was once ruled by King Laman, who was killed in the Aiel War. One of Laman’s brothers is Dalresin, who fathered Moiraine and Taringail by different women. Taringail was married to Rand’s mother, Tigraine Mantear, an Andorian noblewoman.

House Damodred is an important element of both characters’ backstories. As the niece of King Laman, Moiraine is considered royalty and one of the people in line to eventually inherit the Sun Throne. The aforementioned Taringail, Moiraine’s half-brother, has a connection to Rand’s backstory, which was teased in Wheel of Time episode 5. Upon his introduction to the series, Loial (Hammed Animashaun) correctly identified Rand as a member of the desert-dwelling Aiel race based on his red hair. As far as Rand knows, he was born in the Two Rivers as the son of Tam al’Thor, but in the books, Rand’s parents are Tigraine and Janduin, a chief of one of the Aiel tribes. Andor had Tigraine marry Taringail to form an alliance between their kingdom and Cairhien. Later, Tigraine abandoned the palace and fled to the Aiel Waste, where she met the man who would become Rand’s father.

The history of House Damodred may not be vital to Wheel of Time season 1’s story, but is sure to be important in the future. One of the books’ principal characters, Galad, is from House Damodred and is related by blood to both Moiraine and Rand. Galad is the son of Tigraine and Taringail, meaning that he is Rand’s half-brother and Moiraine’s half-nephew. As a result of Taringail’s later marriage to Queen Morgase of Andor, Galad is also a part of the Andorian royal family, which consists of key Wheel of Time characters Gawyn and Elayne Trakand. Given that the latter has already been confirmed for The Wheel of Time season 2, the introduction of Galad and deeper exploration of the show’s royal families are expected to come soon.
