There's no denying that the new series The Wheel Of Time, based on the fantasy book series, has a very similar tone to Game Of Thrones, another fantastic television series that was also based on a line of fantasy novels.
Both shows are set in a nondescript long-ago time and involve things like magical powers, different societies of people, mythical creatures, and an unstoppable evil force with an imminent arrival. In addition to these similarities, these new characters are also reminiscent of the GOT cast, and each one seems to have a counterpart from the famous series.
In addition to smaller, more human antagonists, both series also have one larger foe that looms somewhere off in the distance, to be dealt with later on. In The Wheel Of Time, that villain is called The Dark One.
The Dark One is a mythical, godlike creature that wants to bring destruction to the world and have people fight in their name. Similarly, the Night King's goal was the decimation of mankind and total rule over Earth. Ancient, almost immortal villains like The Dark One appear in many fantasy book series, with another similar example being that of Sauron, from The Lord Of The Rings.
One of the most obvious character parallels between the shows is Logain and Daenerys. Both of them choose to be a leader instead of having anyone else proclaim it for them. The two are both even called "Dragon" and have a special ability to convince people to join their cause.
Additionally, both Logain and Dany talk about "breaking the wheel." For Dany, the wheel symbolized the endless cycle of tyranny, slavery, and unfit leaders on the throne. Logain wants to break the wheel of time, and the cycle of the fight between the people, the Dragon, and the Dark One.
Like Jon Snow, Rand al'Thor is a simple young man. He wants nothing more than to live in the village he was raised, get married, and start a family. Jon, similarly, wanted a simple life, away from the pressures of politics and his reputation.
However, both characters are unwillingly thrown into roles of power and responsibility and have to navigate their new life paths. Although their new journey isn't what they had planned for themselves, they give it 100% effort.
Nynaeve is headstrong and confident in herself, even tracking Moiraine and Lan when they could have easily killed her. Arya, even at a young age, had that same self-assuredness and was the bravest of the Stark family. She even had a small sword (Needle) for fighting, as Nynaeve has.
The two are also destined for greater things and a more powerful role inside of their stories. Arya was an exceptionally skilled assassin and is later trained by the Faceless Men to become even greater. Likewise, Nynaeve displays great ability, and Liandrin tells Moiraine that she will become a novice at the White Tower.
Both Egwene and Sansa (in her later years) don't let their emotions get in the way of their decision-making. They've both been tortured and put in impossible situations, but are still strong and able women who care about others as much as themselves.
These two women embrace their strengths, and Egwene wants to explore her magical abilities just as much as Sansa wanted to show that she could be a fearless and compassionate ruler of the North. They have no problem being leaders but aren't power-hungry, like others.
Samwell Tarly was a soft-spoken character who was able to show exceptional bravery for the people he cared about, and Perrin is that same way. Mostly quiet and focused on his guilt over his wife's death, Perrin doesn't seem like he'd be a fighter. But, when Egwene's life is in danger, he awakens a wolf-like energy within himself and protects her.
Samwell Tarly was equally unassuming, but strong when he needs to be. Where Gilly and her child are concerned, there wasn't anything Sam wouldn't do to keep them safe. Fans who favor these two are strong, yet sensitive like they are.
While there is thankfully no incest in Mat's story, his priorities and moral journey are similar to Jamie's. Jamie's top priority is the safety and success of his family. He had an abusive father and always felt like it was him and his sister against the world.
Mat has a similar sole concern: the wellbeing of his sisters. With a general distaste for his own parents, Mat only cares about his sisters and greatly wants to get back to them. He also, like Jamie, has a general disregard for essentially everyone else, even being callous and mean at times.
Bran and Moiraine are often up in the clouds and distant from others. They are generally less talkative than those around them, but what they do say is meaningful and carries weight. Both have a special position in their communities and are seen as very dominant magical people.
Additionally, the two characters have a habit of traveling nonstop trying to complete a task. Moiraine wants to find the Dragon Reborn and Bran wanted to find the Three-Eyed Raven and discover what his visions meant.
Lan takes his job as Moiraine's Warder very seriously, as all Warders do. However, like Brienne, Lan is revered for his skill and ability to protect a very important person. Although Lan and Brienne both have feelings for the people that they fight with and guard, they don't allow themselves to be too distracted.
Like Brienne's love for Jamie, Lan's bond with Moiraine is invigorated by their battles and travels together. Brienne and Lan have immense respect for the person they love and would give their life to protect theirs. Brienne and Jamie lifted fans' hearts as a duo, and Lan and Moiraine will do the same.
Liandrin is a natural leader, and charismatic to boot. Cersei, likewise, effortlessly took on complicated political environments and rules over her kingdom. She seemed to know the gossip around court before anyone else did, and used it to benefit herself or make intimidating threats.
Without being quite as ruthless as Cersei just yet, Liandrin asserts her authority at will and with no leniency. She also is very skilled at making passive-aggressive comments, especially to Moiraine, and seems at home being in control of others.
Tyrion was never taken very seriously at court at the beginning of the series because of his debaucherous lifestyle and contempt from his father. Thom, equally, would not usually be taken very seriously, being a musician and occasional thief.
These two men, against surface-level judgments, are extremely knowledgable about a great many things and end up using that knowledge in an attempt to help people with greater powers than their own. For Tyrion, that person was Dany, and he came up with many brilliant plans as her advisor. For Thom, it was Mat and Rand.
Jorah had a love for Daenerys that grew so great, he would have moved mountains to give her shade on a sunny day. That level of devotion is matched in Stepin and his bond with Kerene. Stepin is beside himself with grief after Kerene is killed, and took his own life instead of being a Warder to anyone else.
Jorah would have and did give his life to protect Dany. If Jorah had been alive when Dany was eventually killed, there is no doubt his reaction to her untimely death would have been similar to Stepin's.
