While Spider-Man: No Way Home’s introduction of the MCU multiverse has been greatly anticipated, Marvel still needs to remember to use its original idea for the movie, which was to include Kraven the Hunter. Set to release on December 17th, Spider-Man: No Way Home is already breaking box office records due to its ticket presales and may have the largest opening weekend since the COVID-19 pandemic started. However, despite the movie's prospective success, it's important for the future of the franchise doesn't completely abandon it's earlier storyline.
As the third installment in the MCU’s Spider-Man films, Spider-Man: No Way Home follows Peter Parker as he struggles to find balance in his life after Mysterio revealed his secret identity in Spider-Man: Far from Home. When Peter seeks magical help from Dr. Strange, he accidentally interrupts the spell, allowing villains from other realities to leak into Peter’s world as the multiverse breaks open. However, although trailers suggest a veritable rogues' gallery in store for audiences, Kraven the Hunter is a notable absentee. In Marvel Comics, Kraven the Hunter is one of Spider-Man's regular opponents. An expert big-game hunter, Kraven’s major goal is to prove that he is the greatest hunter in the world by hunting down and defeating Spider-Man. Due to his excellent tracking and hunting skills, Kraven is one of Spider-Man’s most challenging enemies, even beating Spider-Man in one of his famous stories, Kraven's Last Hunt.
Despite this reputation, Kraven the Hunter will not be in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Instead, the third Spider-Man movie will focus on including villains from previous Spider-Man films, such as Alfred Molina's Doc Ock, Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin, and Jamie Foxx's Electro. However, before establishing that Spider-Man: No Way Home would involve the multiverse, Jon Watts, the director, had planned to make Kraven the primary villain of the movie. While this idea to feature Kraven in the third Spider-Man movie was canceled, Marvel should still use Kraven later due to both the popularity and story potential of the character, as well as his adversarial legacy with Spider-Man.
A key reason why Kraven the Hunter would make a valuable addition to the MCU is due to his popularity in Spider-Man comics. His complexity and the danger he poses to Spider-Man have already led multiple directors, besides Watts, to want to include Kraven in their films. For example, Ryan Coogler, the director of Black Panther, originally suggested using Kraven in the movie, but his idea was rejected. Additionally, Sony recently released information about an upcoming Kraven the Hunter solo film in development. Slated for release in 2023, the movie will be directed by J. C. Chandor and star Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who previously portrayed Quicksilver in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Continuing Sony’s trend of creating live-action movies based on Spider-Man’s villains and antiheroes, a solo Kraven the Hunter film will only make the character more popular.
Marvel should also consider including Kraven the Hunter in the MCU due to his story potential. As a villain bound by honor, Kraven’s character could be interesting to explore in a variety of stories, especially since he has never appeared in a live-action Spider-Man film. Sony’s Kraven movie will change that, but it will not necessarily exclude Kraven from the MCU. So far, Sony has kept their SPUMC (Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters) adjacent to the MCU, so crossovers between the franchises are possible. For example, Micheal Keaton's Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming will appear in Sony’s upcoming film, Morbius. Although Kraven the Hunter will not appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home, the MCU should still use his character in future movies, especially if they can build upon Sony’s upcoming film.
