John Cho and Annie Murphy are set to star in Praise Petey, an upcoming animated comedy series from Freeform. The show will follow Petey, voiced by Schitt’s Creek star Annie Murphy, a New York City “it” girl who’s tasked with updating her father’s failing small-town cult. Praise Petey marks the Disney-owned network’s first stab at animation since rebranding to Freeform in 2016.
Freeform has ordered Praise Petey—a working title—from creator Anna Drezen, who serves as a head writer on Saturday Night Live. Drezen will executive produce alongside Monica Padrick (Central Park), Greg Daniels (Parks and Recreation), and Mike Judge (Silicon Valley). The series is produced by Disney Television Studios’ 20th Television Animation, with animation by ShadowMachine.
In addition to Murphy, Praise Petey features Cowboy Bebop star John Cho as Bandit, a potential love interest for Petey and a member of the cult since childhood. Amy Hill voices his mother Mae Mae, one of the cult’s high-ranking members. Voicing Petey’s parents are Christine Baranski, a magazine editor and member of Manhattan’s haughty upper crust, and Stephen Root, a charming, homespun cult leader. Also joining is The Flash’s Kiersey Clemons as a local bartender.
The official synopsis reads, “Praise Petey follows Petey, a New York City “it” girl who has it all until her life comes crashing down around her. As luck would have it, a mysterious gift from her father gives her a new lease on life: she’s going to “lean into” modernizing his small-town cult. Once the girl who had everything, now she has to use her city smarts to revamp her father’s failing cult and be a better leader than he was, a much more laidback one — a nice one — a girl boss!”
