Why Call Of Duty: Vanguard's End Of Match Times Are Annoying

Editor’s Note: A lawsuit has been filed against Activision Blizzard by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, which alleges the company has engaged in abuse, discrimination, and retaliation against its female employees. Activision Blizzard has denied the allegations. The full details of the Activision Blizzard lawsuit (content warning: rape, suicide, abuse, harassment) are being updated as new information becomes available.

Some players who are sinking their time into Call of Duty: Vanguard's multiplayer are getting annoyed at how long the end of match times are taking. Vanguard is Sledgehammer Games' latest entry into the Call of Duty franchise and puts players back into World War 2 action with 20 multiplayer maps at launch. There are also tonnes of new WW2 weapons to unlock and level up, and the weapons are more powerful than ever as they can now have up to 10 attachments placed on them without the use of a perk or wildcard.

Changes to the attachment system in Call of Duty are exciting, and the plethora of options available has meant that unlocking every attachment for a weapon takes a long time as the max weapon level for most guns in level 70. Players are trying to max out their weapons as quickly as possible for when Vanguard is integrated into Warzone on December 2, which will allow them to put their weapons to the test on the Pacific-based Caldera map. Warzone is a game where if someone is not using the absolute best gun then their chances of winning are significantly lower. Equally, going into the new Warzone season without every gun having every available attachment will put a given player at a disadvantage.

Vanguard offers players an option to speed up their progression in the form of double-XP tokens which can be used to gain both double weapon XP and double player XP. Double weapon XP is one of the best ways to level up Vanguard weapons. The issue players are encountering is that the end of match times are so long that their double weapon XP tokens are being wasted. Once activated, a token continues to run down whether the game is being played or not. This includes the end of match screens and being in the lobbies. Even if a player is not using a weapon XP token, the end of match times add up and take away time they could be actively playing the game.

The end of match times in Call of Duty: Vanguard are frustrating players because they take too long and are very repetitive. At the end of every match, there is a play of the game highlight, followed by a screen that lets players vote between three possible MVP players based on their match performance. These two screens take nearly a minute to complete and can be frustrating to sit through every time.

The play of the game highlight is often underwhelming, and they are still currently bugged. The MVP screen has highlight intros similar to Overwatch that occur for each MVP candidate, but because there are not many of these in the game players usually end up watching the same animation three times before voting. This, combined with the game's bugs and repetitive gameplay elements, adds to the feeling that Vanguard was rushed.

These additional highlights provide very little in terms of value, except a small amount of player XP for voting in the MVP screen and a bit more if a given player is voted as the match's MVP. If a player was to instead go into the menu and quit the game a second after the result is confirmed, they can save over 50 seconds between each match. Call of Duty: Vanguard is a fun game with a fresh challenge for players to level up their weapons, but it needs to change the end of match screen settings to give players a faster overall experience.
