The Masked Singer: 10 Times Professional Singers Flopped

The Masked Singer, despite all its wacky leanings, is a singing competition. The masks and costumes are delightful, but they are just a way to hide the identity of the singer. The costumes are not judged or voted on; it's the singing itself. As a result, one would think that professional singers and musical artists would have a leg up on the competition. But that is not always the case.

Many professional singers have bombed on The Masked Singer, whether it's getting voted out surprisingly early or losing to a non-singer. Whatever the case, it's always surprising to see a pro reveal their identity early in the competition.

La Toya Jackson has never been as popular as some of her siblings. None of her albums have broken into the top 100, and her highest-charting song is "Heart Don't Lie," which peaked at No. 56 on the Billboard Hot 100. Jackson appeared on the first season of the show, dressed as The Alien.

Unfortunately, she did not do well. Her very first performance landed her in the bottom three, and she was eliminated in week seven, getting out-performed by actress Rumer Willis (daughter of Bruce).

Patti LaBelle commercially peaked in 1986 with the release of Winner in You. The album reached No. 1 and went platinum, and the accompanying single "On My Own" is her highest-charting song, peaking at No. 1. LaBelle appeared as the Flower on the show's second season, performing four songs.

Unfortunately, she was eliminated in week seven, losing to the likes of an actor/comedian and an NBA player. Not liking the Flower may be an unpopular opinion about The Masked Singer, but there's no denying that she performed rather poorly for a professional singer.

Michelle Williams rose to fame as a member of Destiny's Child, but she has been unfortunately overshadowed by the solo success of Beyoncé. Her visual album alone helped redefine cinema. Williams appeared as the Butterfly and performed four songs.

However, she was eliminated in week eight after performing a mediocre rendition of Demi Lovato's "Sorry Not Sorry." She went home before NBA player Victor Oladipo, who ended up placing fifth above Williams's seventh.

It's actually quite shocking to see how quickly Lil Wayne was eliminated. A professional and very popular rapper, Lil Wayne made the unfortunate decision to forgo rap in favor of hard rock, singing Lenny Kravitz's "Are You Gonna Go My Way."

The performance was not well received, and Lil Wayne was the first contestant to be eliminated. He was beaten by the likes of comedian/game-show host Drew Carey and NFL player Rob Gronkowski.

Chaka Khan is a megastar, having sold more than 70 million records and winning 10 Grammy awards. She was also part of one of the best '90s movie soundtracks, appearing on the soundtrack to Waiting to Exhale. This only makes her disappointing run on season three even more shocking.

Khan appeared as Miss Monster and performed just three songs before getting the boot. She was eliminated after a poor performance of Lesley Gore's "You Don't Own Me," getting beaten by an NFL player and a socialite.

Dionne Warwick's career has spanned multiple decades, scoring top ten hits in the 1960s, '70s, and '80s, complete with the No. 1 song "That's What Friends Are For." Warwick appeared as Mouse on the show's third season and performed surprisingly poorly, landing in 14th place.

She completed just two songs and was the second contestant eliminated from Group B (following skateboarder Tony Hawk). In fact, she was even beaten by TV host Tom Bergeron, who defeated Warwick with a rendition of Elvis Presley's "Bossa Nova Baby."

Professional rappers seem to have a hard time on The Masked Singer. Busta Rhymes, who is part of one of the best movie rap songs ("Hit 'Em High" from Space Jam), appeared on the fourth season dressed as an extravagant Dragon.

Unfortunately, he performed just one song before getting eliminated in last place. He performed LL Cool J's "Mama Said Knock You Out," but it wasn't good enough to carry on. He was even beaten by actor Brian Austin Green of Beverly Hills, 90210 fame.

Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray fame appeared on the fifth season of the show, competing as Orca. McGrath was a wild card contestant but performed just two songs - Twisted Sister's "We’re Not Gonna Take It" and Poison's "Every Rose Has Its Thorn."

The latter got him eliminated, and he placed in a disappointing ninth. He was even beaten by two actors: sitcom star Tamera Mowry and Tyrese Gibson of Fast & Furious fame.

While he was first known as a member of New Edition, Bobby Brown eventually launched a successful solo career that saw the wildly successful album Don't Be Cruel. The album hit No. 1, spawned five top ten singles, and was certified 7x platinum.

But he proved rather disappointing on the show's fifth season. Brown competed as Crab and placed in eighth after just three songs. He was eliminated following his performance of Phil Collins's "In The Air Tonight," getting defeated by professional actor Tyrese Gibson.

Toni Braxton was competing on the sixth and most recent season of The Masked Singer. Dressed as the Pufferfish, Braxton competed in Group A but didn't last beyond the debut week. She outlasted NBA player Dwight Howard and actress Vivica A. Fox, but her performance of Dua Lipa's "Levitating" proved a huge disappointment.

Braxton was just the third contestant eliminated, placing in 14th. To make matters even more embarrassing, she was defeated by two comedians: Larry the Cable Guy and Rob Schneider.
