Star Wars might take place a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, but the series is well-known for its impeccable fashion and even some avant-garde style choices. When the original trilogy captivated audiences in the 1970s and 1980s, it did so largely because it looked like nothing that had ever come before it, the many stunning costumes included.
There are definitely characters in the original trilogy who are much more stylish than others, with clear fashion frontrunners like Lando Calrissian and Leia Organa. But even unlikely candidates, such as the more muted Luke Skywalker and the seldom-used Mon Mothma, manage to turn in some of the trilogy's best outfits.
10 Lando's Rebel General Uniform (Return Of The Jedi)
Thanks in large part to Billy Dee Williams's indisputable charm, Lando Calrissian has long been known as one of the most charming and most fashionable characters in Star Wars. This holds true in one of Lando's final appearances in the original trilogy when he has been promoted to the position of General within the Rebel Alliance.
When Lando reconnects with Han at the Rebel base, he is sporting a new uniform: a fitted khaki-colored button-down shirt, slim-fitting pale blue slacks, tall black boots, and an incredibly regal powder blue cape, finished off with a delicate chain. It makes a strong lasting impression stylistically and also effectively communicates his promotion.
9 Mon Mothma's Rebel Leader Gown
Mon Mothma is an underrated supporting character in the original Star Wars trilogy. Although she may not have much screen time in her appearance in Return of the Jedi, Mon Mothma still leaves an incredibly powerful impression on viewers due to both her regal demeanor and her suitably majestic costume.
As the leader of the Rebel Alliance, Mon Mothma is a woman who must command everyone's attention and respect. When she presents in front of the entire Rebellion, she does so wearing an incredibly queenly white layered gown, which is further accented with layered necklaces and pendants. It's a relatively simple outfit for the Star Wars universe, but its simplicity makes it all the more stunning.
8 Han's Endor Battle Outfit (Return Of The Jedi)
Han Solo is a man who has never looked bad a single day in his life. Even when he's stuck in a trash compactor in A New Hope, he still looks good. But Return of the Jedi gives Han an outfit that takes his classic, well-known costume and elevates it to a new and more dashing level.
During the adventures on Endor, Han is wearing a creme-colored long-sleeved shirt, dark brown slacks, a dark blue fitted vest, and his brown holster belt. Adding an extra layer of dashing to the entire look is the long, distressed brown coat that he occasionally wears over the ensemble.
7 Leia's Medal Ceremony Gown (A New Hope)
Without question, Leia Organa is the original trilogy's true style icon. Leia has many good and bad outfits in Star Wars, but most of her outfits are incredible and highlight her power and beauty both. At the end of A New Hope, Leia plays a key role in the medal ceremony on Yavin 4.
It's in the medal ceremony that Leia wears her most regal outfit, befitting her role as the princess of Alderaan. While delivering the medals to Han and Luke, Leia is wearing a stunning full body-length white gown with a thick silver belt at its middle, a semi-sheer white cloak, and a thick silver necklace, while she keeps her hair piled high in an intricate braided bun atop her head.
6 Han's Echo Base Outfit (The Empire Strikes Back)
Han Solo's most famous look might be the one that involves him striking a heroic pose while wearing a vest and dark trousers. But easily his best look in the original trilogy occurs in the second film, The Empire Strikes Back, on the Rebel Alliance's Echo Base on Hoth.
Due to the wintry nature of Hoth, Han is wearing more layers than usual and the entire outfit is a perfect fit from head to toe. Han is wearing a more intricate shirt than usual, a white long-sleeved, wrap-style, button-down shirt. He's paired it with a sharp dark blue jacket, with multiple pockets on each side and the sleeves as well. Finishing the outfit off is a slimming pair of brown slacks with gold detailing down the side.
5 Luke's All-Black Outfit (Return Of The Jedi)
Luke Skywalker is hardly a fashion icon. He has the fewest good outfits of the main cast of characters, including spending almost the entirety of A New Hope in some dreadful ponchos and boring muted colors. The Empire Strikes Back isn't much better for his character, which finds him in darker tans and greens and outfits that rarely match.
But everything changes in Return of the Jedi. Now assured of his Jedi training and believing he is meeting his fate when he faces off with his father again, Luke wears an entirely black outfit, matching from his gloves to his slacks to his gloves. But what makes the outfit truly iconic is the white detailing inside of his shirt, revealed when the neckline is folded back after fighting.
4 Leia's Cloud City Pantsuit (The Empire Strikes Back)
Many costumes in the world of the original trilogy involve relatively muted or cold colors, with plenty of browns, greys, whites, and blues populating every character's wardrobe. But Leia has a pop of vibrant color added to her wardrobe in one particular sequence when visiting Cloud City in The Empire Strikes Back.
As she waits in her guest quarters in Bespin, Leia has a gorgeous red pantsuit, consisting of a crimson tunic worn over slim-cut trousers. Layered over that is a sleeveless white robe, with matching red detailing. The entire look is perfectly completed by Leia's intricate loop braid hairstyle.
3 Leia's Hoth Winter Outfit (The Empire Strikes Back)
Even though The Empire Strikes Back adds the previously discussed pops of color to Leia's wardrobe, the sequel film also finds Leia in her most stunning all-white outfit of the entire trilogy. During the Rebel efforts on Echo Base on Hoth, Leia plays a real leadership role, but she also commands everyone's attention due to her perfect winter outfit.
Her hair is pulled up in a tight braid crown. Her high-collared white button-down shirt perfectly blends into her high-waisted white slacks. Adding the perfect finishing touches are her puffy creme-colored vest, tall grey boots, and a fitted pair of white winter gloves.
2 Lando's Blue And Gold Uniform (The Empire Strikes Back)
The Empire Strikes Back adds many characters to the Star Wars universe, but no one gets as impressive or as stylish an entrance into the galaxy far, far away as Lando Calrissian. When Lando first arrives on the scene, he does so in an incredibly dramatic way, feigning anger as he storms out to greet and embrace his longtime Star Wars frenemy Han Solo.
By virtue of the way he stalks out into the scene, Lando draws attention to his truly magnificent cape, a stunning deep powder blue with incredibly intricate gold details on the underside of it. The blue of the cape perfectly matches his shirt, which then leads into a thick black belt and narrow black trousers. It's a scene-stealing look from top to bottom and perfectly suited for his first appearance.
1 Leia's Ewok Village Dress (Return Of The Jedi)
Leia is almost always on the move and getting involved in action sequences, which means that most of her outfits have to be optimal for fighting in. In Return of the Jedi, however, things briefly quieten down for her character as she spends time in the Ewok village on Endor. It's during these comparatively quiet moments that Leia gets to truly stun in her best outfit yet.
During her time with the Ewoks, Leia acquires a long pale brown dress with a striking slit for her leg. She layers it over a long-sleeved white top and wears her hair completely down and naturally wavy for the first time in the entire trilogy, making for an absolutely breathtaking look.
