Breezehome is one of the five lodgings in vanilla Skyrim that Elder Scrolls fans can call home once they've aided Jarl Balgruuf in protecting Whiterun from a dragon attack. Players can find Breezehome near the main gate of Whiterun Hold, directly to the left of the Warmaiden's weapons and armor shop. Proventus Avenicci, Jarl Balgruuf's steward, will give the Dragonborn the key to the Skyrim player home in Whiterun once they've completed the main quest, "Dragon Rising."
After retrieving the Dragonstone in Bleak Falls Barrow and slaying the dragon at the Western Watchtower, the Dragonborn will be dubbed Thane of Whiterun, entitling them to purchase property in the city. Players can buy Breezehome from Proventus Avenicci for 5,000 gold; however, there is a means of obtaining the Skyrim house in Whiterun for free. To accomplish this exploit, players still must have sufficient gold on hand to make the purchase.
To get a house in Whiterun for free, Skyrim players must speak to Proventus when he's about to either sleep up get up from bed. His chambers can be found in the Jarl's Quarters of Dragonsreach keep. Before talking with the steward, it's recommended that players create a save file in Skyrim to avoid glitches or in case they fail their first attempt. Then, while Proventus is beside his bed, interact with him to open the dialogue options and select, "I'd like to purchase a house in the city." After he offers Breezehome for 5000 gold, proceed with the purchase but immediately open one of the nearby wardrobes while he finishes his dialogue. If the player quickly opens the container before hearing a "key jingle," the endeavor is successful. However, if the wardrobe cannot be accessed before Proventus gives the Dragonborn the key, they must reload their save and try again.
After successfully opening the contents of the wardrobe, place all of the players' gold inside. Once the player exits the screen, they will still receive the key to Breezehome from Proventus. Now, reopen the wardrobe to retrieve the gold. After players have pulled off this exploit, they can access their new house in Whiterun for free.
Alternatively, there is a lore-friendly way in Skyrim to get a house in Whiterun for free. This method involves getting married to Ysolda and living in her home without cost. However, players must first speak with Maramal in Riften and purchase an Amulet of Mara from him. Then, after completing Ysolda's quest, "Rare Gifts," players will be able to take her hand in marriage, providing a humble yet free home in Whiterun.
