Warning: Spoilers for Only Murders in the Building lie ahead.
Hulu's Only Murders in the Building was released in August 2021 and wrapped up season 1 in October. The 10 episode season ended on a cliffhanger, ensuring fans that season 2 is on the horizon. After solving the initial murder in their own home building, the three main characters are now at the center of another murder investigation.
The three new friends didn’t always get along with each other but they were always there for one another. The twist ending and a few loose strings from earlier in the story have left fans with lingering questions before season 2 airs.
In one of the final scenes, Charles and Oliver run to save Mabel after getting an alarming text from a stranger. But when they opened the door to Mabel’s apartment, she was sitting in a pool of Bunny’s blood with her lifeless body in front of her.
As bad as it looked, Mabel pleaded her innocence and claimed she walked in on it. This, however, begs the question: who killed Bunny? And if the death was in Mabel’s apartment, was someone trying to frame her? Are Mabel or—perhaps her new boyfriend—suspects?
When Jan confessed to killing Tim Kono, Charles knew that he was next. Jan made it clear that she kills her boyfriends when she fears the relationship is ending. After Charles suspected Jan was lying to him, she came incredibly close to killing him.
With her fascination and whimsy for murder, it’s evident that Tim Kono wasn’t the only victim of Jan’s. And if that’s the case, who else has Jan killed? Has she killed anyone else in the Arconia? Or does she move from apartment building to apartment building, finding new victims? Hopefully, these questions are answered in season 2.
The iconic Nathan Lane guest stars as Teddy Dimas. Teddy and Theo Dimas were also residents in the Arconia. In fact, Teddy used to work closely with Oliver, which is why Oliver felt comfortable enough going to him and asking for money when he was down on his luck.
After the success of Oliver, Charles, and Mabel’s podcast, however, Teddy invested in it as long as his company’s name was the main sponsor. But as the threesome began investigating more, they realized a shocking revelation — Theo and Teddy were murderers and grave robbers. The last viewers heard of the Dimas, they were arrested and jailed for their crimes. But that doesn’t mean they can’t come back in season 2.
As fans who finished the series know, Jan claimed to be the murderer of Tim Kono in a major plot twist. But before that revelation came to be, Jan was seen walking to her apartment and there was a note on the door. The note said “I’m watching you” and minutes later Jan was stabbed.
It was later revealed that Jan actually stabbed herself as a way to deflect attention, but that doesn’t totally explain the note on her door. Why would Jan write a note to herself that only she would see? If that’s the case, then someone else in the Arconia was suspicious of her.
After Charles and Oliver found Mabel in a compromising position with Bunny's body, the three were escorted to police cars. Their neighbors, podcast fans, and friends all watched as Mabel wore blood-stained clothes. But with Mabel pleading her innocence, and Charles and Oliver walking into the scene of the crime, will anyone believe them?
All three are intelligent enough to prove their innocence but will it work? Season 2 could start off with Mabel in jail while Oliver and Charles try to prove her innocence while also trying to solve the case of Bunny’s body.
Once the trio found out who murdered Tim Kono, their podcast was complete. They solved the mystery when the odds were against them and with Jan behind bars, the Arconia was a safer place.
However, Bunny’s murder opens the door for another murder mystery for the podcast. With season 1 of their podcast dedicated to Tim Kono, season 2 could be centered around Bunny’s life and death. As the landlord of the building, Bunny knew all, which could create interesting content.
Before their podcast Only Murders in the Building took off, Mabel and Oliver were both in financial distress. Mabel was crashing in her aunt’s former apartment and Oliver was thousands of dollars behind in his apartment dues. Charles seemed okay financially but he had been out of work for far too long and wanted to get back into acting.
Bunny tried evicting them, not only because of their financial woes but because they brought bad press to the Arconia. But after they solved the murder of Tim Kono, Bunny had a change of heart and she allowed them to remain residents. But now that they were potential suspects in another murder, will someone else evict them?
Detective Williams was one of the best characters in the series. She was introduced as the main officer in charge of Tim’s death and at first, in her eyes, Tim’s death was an open and shut case. But thanks to the podcast, it appeared that she missed some evidence that proved otherwise.
Detective Williams eventually became friendly with the popular trio and worked with them. But in the final moments of season 1, it seemed like she knew exactly what was happening. As the threesome was being led to the cop cars, she warned them not to say a word. It was as if she knew it was a setup and was warning them from further damage.
As the trio was celebrating their major win of finding Tim Kono’s murderer, Mabel went down to her apartment to grab more champagne. While she was down there, Charles and Oliver heard police cars pull in front of their apartment building.
At that moment, they both got a text from a number that told them to leave the apartment immediately. Who's a character with the kind of personality that would warn Charles and Oliver? And while it appears there’s another murderer in the building, who texted Charles and Oliver to get out if it wasn't Mabel?
Cinda Canning was a fellow podcaster with a massive empire and a character who was unintentionally funny. She was the creator and host of Charles, Oliver, and Mabel’s favorite murder mystery podcast — and the inspiration for their own. But once Only Murders in the Building got more popular, Cinda appeared jealous.
Oddly enough, when Mabel, Charles, and Oliver were taken in by the cops over the death of Bunny, Cinda was there watching it all happen. However, Cinda didn’t live at the Arconia, so why was she there witnessing their arrest? Her presence seemed suspicious with such short notice of yet another murder.
