Ella Hunt, who plays Susan Gilbert on Apple TV+’s Dickinson, explains the reason there is no musical episode in season 3. The historical dramedy is led by Hailee Steinfeld (Hawkeye, The Edge of Seventeen) as famed American poet Emily Dickinson and is a modernized retelling of Dickinson’s exploration of her society. The series was created by Alena Smith and includes many contemporary elements including tone, dialogue, and a wide variety of anachronistic music that highlights the coming-of-age qualities of the series reminiscent of Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette.
As music continues to be an essential element to the series, fans were hoping to have an entirely musical episode in Dickinson season 3. However, Hunt told The Wrap the reason there was no musical episode this season was because of COVID limitations. Hunt says even the cast was ‘pushing for this season to have a musical episode,’ but it simply wasn’t ‘conducive to a healthy work environment.’ Read Hunt’s full quote below.
“That was something that we — the whole cast in fact — were pushing for this season was to have a musical episode, which we sort of get round to having. But another limitation of COVID time is that having us all singing together in a room is actually really not conducive to a healthy work environment right now. Yeah, a lot of spit. It’s not safe, which is so funny. But I’m really glad that we have this sing-along episode.”
Dickinson fans will continue to hear music through the series, as well as Hunt and Steinfeld’s own voices. In season 2, Hunt beautifully sang "Split the Lark," one of Dickinson’s most famous poems. This season, in lieu of a full musical episode, Hunt sings an 1862 song titled ‘There Are Plenty of Finish in the Sea,’ and later Steinfeld performs “Hard Times Come Again No More.” Though the two don’t sing together, much to the dismay of fans, there is hope Hunt and Steinfeld will reunite their voices outside of the series. This may be tough as Steinfeld has been picked up by the MCU as Kate Bishop, with her first project, Hawkeye, to debut on November 24.
