Apple Patches Bizarre Watch Series 7 Bug In New Update

The Apple Watch Series 7 had a somewhat bizarre and apparently rare charging bug that should be resolved with the latest update from Apple. The newest Apple Watch has only been in customers' hands for a few weeks so it might be a more widespread issue than it currently seems, and it simply hasn't been reported much yet.

The Apple Watch Series 7 was a nice update to Apple's health and fitness-focused smartwatch, increasing display size and making the already hard-to-crack screen even more resistant to smashing. No new sensors were added but there were new watch faces that take advantage of the larger screen and a keyboard with QuickPath capability. Charging the Apple Watch Series 7 is faster than previous generations when using the right charger and charging cable.

At least, charging the Apple Watch Series 7 is supposed to be faster. Some users had problems with charging as seen on a MacRumors forum thread. The latest watchOS 8.1.1 update from Apple should resolve the issue and bring all Apple Watch Series 7 charging up to full speed with no further trouble, which should be a big relief for owners of this shiny new wearable.

The problem that some were experiencing resulted in charging being slow or, in some cases even starting and stopping, seemingly at random. Initially, the problem resulted in Apple requesting the faulty Apple Watch Series 7 be returned, however, it appears it was actually a software bug. With watchOS 8.1.1 the charging problem should be fixed and updating is easy. Simply open the Watch app on the paired iPhone tap General, then Software Update. If a new version of the operating system is available, an install button will appear. Software updates can also be initiated from the Apple Watch itself using the same process but starting in the Settings app.

Users reported the issue happening with a variety of chargers, including Apple's recommended setup of a 20-watt and the Apple Watch Series 7 charging cable which allows for the fastest charging. It would be a great inconvenience to set an Apple Watch Series 7 to charge overnight only to wake to a low battery at the start of a busy day. An update was clearly an urgent need and it's a relief that Apple corrected the problem quickly.
