Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl Confirms Toph & Reveals Moveset

The upcoming Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl gains yet another new fighter in Avatar: The Last Airbender's Toph Beifong. The critically-acclaimed Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise is already seeing some solid representation in Nickelodeon’s answer to the Super Smash Bros series thanks to Avatars Aang and Korra being set to appear as playable characters, as well as getting their own designated stages.

Avatar fans will fondly recognize the young but powerful Toph, as she was a leading member of Avatar: The Last Airbender since its second season - referred to as “Book 2: Earth.” The blind daughter of the Earth Kingdom’s wealthy Beifong family, Toph was trained in the art of Earthbending at a young age by badgermoles, which also helped her learn how to see by feeling the ground beneath her feet. She was soon recruited by Avatar Aang and his friends to help the young hero learn Earthbending, during which she proved to be a valuable ally in the battle against the Fire Nation. She even invented the art of Metalbending in the process. Returning as an old woman in the follow-up series The Legend Of Korra, Toph would help mentor the next Avatar, Korra, who also appears in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl. Toph proved to be a popular character among the Avatar fanbase due to her rough-and-tumble personality and impressive displays of power throughout the original series.

Now Toph has been confirmed as a playable character in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, with Fair Play Labs’ Markus Villalobos showing off the young Earthbender’s moveset to IGN earlier today in a gameplay overview video. This six-minute showcase depicts Toph as a ground-based brawler, making up for her lack of aerial prowess with strong attacks and impressive ranged abilities. Some of her noteworthy moves include her upward-aiming Champion’s Belt (where she hits enemies with the prize belt she won as the Earth Rumble Champion), Rock Slide (which has her slide below opponents to take them out at the knees), and Boulder Hurl (in which she channels her Earthbending powers to fire a large rock at foes). Additionally, she can use her Iron Boot move to place floating rock platforms below her to recover. Her designated stage is Omashu, an Earth Kingdom city with rolling minecarts that can knock back unsuspecting players.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl was announced back in July and looks to feature beloved characters from Nickelodeon’s vast line-up of cartoon classics as they engage in Super Smash Bros-style combat that its developers hope will make it a success among casual and professional fighting game fans alike. The game’s roster is already packed with popular characters like SpongeBob Squarepants, Ren & Stimpy, and even April O’Neal of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fame. Additionally, developer Ludosity has confirmed that Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl will have DLC characters following its release on October 5, but details about who will make the cut are still forthcoming.

Toph is an extremely popular character among fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender, as well as a natural fit for a fighting game given her competitive nature and impressive Earthbending abilities. Her moveset in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl appears to capture these abilities pretty well, and players will get to channel Toph’s power when the quirky brawler launches later this week.
