Shang-Chi Final Battle Concept Art Shows Dweller In Darkness & Ten Rings

Warning! SPOILERS ahead for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Andy Park, the Visual Development Supervisor at Marvel Studios, has shared a piece of his concept art for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The most recent Marvel Studios film has made a splash in theaters, racking up a record-setting box office and garnering high critic and audience ratings. Shang-Chi is the 25th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to release and the second in its Phase 4 slate, following Black Widow. Phase 4 has started off with a bang, delivering MCU fans four shows and two movies so far, with even more MCU content releasing this year.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings follows Shang-Chi, played by Simu Liu. In the movie, Shang-Chi lives in San Francisco as Shaun, who is trying to hide from his previous life that he escaped: being the son of Wenwu (played by Tony Leung), the leader of the Ten Rings. This group is responsible for many wars in history and some MCU events, including capturing Tony Stark in the original Iron Man movie. Shang-Chi is thrown back into the life he ran away from and has to use his martial arts skills to save the people he loves from the iron fist of Wenwu. Shang-Chi also stars Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh, Meng'er Zhang, Florian Munteanu, and Benedict Wong.

In his post, Park also shares a few details from the development of the film. His design for Shang-Chi's suit, for example, appears to have been translated exactly from his art to the screen. Park's art also shows the Dweller in Darkness, which is revealed in the final fight sequence to be the leader of the Soul Eaters locked away in Ta Lo. This means Marvel's idea for having the Dweller in Darkness show up was something planned early in the creative process, and it paid off, as it gave the MCU an epic battle never been seen in the previous 24 entries. Shang-Chi is also shown harnessing the powers of the Ten Rings, which is one of the biggest moments in the movie, using them to defeat the Dweller in Darkness. While the creature has been defeated, the mystery of the Ten Rings is something future Marvel movies are sure to explore going forward.

The grand scale of Andy Park's art was definitely translated to the the movie. He has been working for Marvel Studios for a while now, and has repeatedly created stunning artwork that helps the MCU's filmmakers see their vision for the movie well before cameras start rolling. Not to mention, it's always interesting to see how true to Park's art the finished films and shows come to be. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is currently playing in theaters, where fans can see Park's concept art come to life.
