The Mandalorian is primed to return audiences to one of the Star Wars franchise's long-forgotten key planets. The first two seasons of the hit Disney+ streaming series have introduced viewers to new planets like Trask and returned to familiar favorites like Tatooine. However, one important world that the show — and Star Wars in general — has yet to return to is Coruscant, which has been largely neglected in the latest Disney live-action projects.
First introduced to audiences in canon via a brief celebratory clip in the special edition of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, the city-planet of Coruscant would go on to become a major location throughout the Star Wars prequel films. The planet served as the central capital from which Chancellor Palpatine ruled and the Jedi operated their legendary temple. It would also become the capital of the evil Galactic Empire following Palpatine's ascension to the status of Emperor, and would transform into a feared planet throughout the Star Wars universe.
Despite its importance in the story of Star Wars, Coruscant has fallen into disuse within the franchise over the last decade. While it has made intermittent appearances in comics, books, and both Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: The Bad Batch, the planet hasn't properly appeared in a live-action film since 2005's Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. However, The Mandalorian now has the perfect opportunity to revisit Coruscant in a future season, and the key to the planet's canon return is Grand Admiral Thrawn.
In the now non-canon Star Wars novel The Last Command — the third installment in Timothy Zahn's beloved Thrawn Trilogy — the calculating Grand Admiral attempts to overthrow the freshly established New Republic by leading an attack against the galaxy's capital planet. The attack was called the Siege of Coruscant, and ended in Thrawn briefly occupying the planet and ruling it as he attempted to resurrect the Empire. In the end, the coup failed, and Thrawn was defeated.
In the second season of The Mandalorian, it's revealed that Ahsoka Tano is on the hunt for Thrawn. The cunning Imperial leader had vanished several years before the destruction of the first Death Star, as seen in the series finale of Star Wars Rebels. It's currently unknown where Thrawn ended up and what he's been planning, but it's possible that an upcoming season of The Mandalorian could adapt the Siege of Coruscant storyline from The Last Command. The creators behind the Star Wars animated and live-action shows have already shown a proclivity for returning Legends material to canon, with Thrawn himself being a standout example. With the events of the siege taking place in 9 ABY, the timelines of the book and The Mandalorian are definitely similar. While an exact adaptation of the book is impossible due to the differences between Legends and Disney's canon, the idea of The Mandalorian season 3 or 4 concluding with a welcome return to Coruscant for a climactic battle against Thrawn is not only exciting, but absolutely possible.
