New MacBook Air With Apple Silicon Is Still Many Months Away, Insider Claims

Apple's rumored redesigned MacBook Air is still almost a year away from entering mass production, according to noted analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo. The upcoming MacBook Air is said to ship with a newer Apple in-house processor that will reportedly be faster and more powerful than the M1 chip found in the current MacBook Air. Earlier leaks also suggested that, as part of the redesign, the new MacBook Air will be lighter than its predecessor and feature a mini-LED display.

Apple is also said to be working on a redesigned MacBook Pro that's slated to be unveiled later this year. The lineup is said to include 14 and 16-inch models, and feature MagSafe charging. Apple is also reportedly planning to replace the Touch Bar in its upcoming MacBook Pro lineup with physical function keys. The MacBook Pro models are also expected to be powered by an updated 'M1X' SoC with a 10-core CPU alongside a 16 or 32-core GPU.

A new research note from TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that the next-gen MacBook Air will enter mass production late in the second quarter or early in the third quarter of 2022, suggesting the release date is likely to be in the third quarter of next year. MacRumors, which claims to have seen Kuo's note, reiterates that it will be powered by an updated Apple chip in line with earlier rumors.

Recent rumors have suggested that the next-generation MacBook Air will be available in a range of colors like the new 24-inch M1 iMac. While the latest report doesn't confirm that point, it does seem to confirm that the next-gen MacBook Air will be a no-show when Apple finally unveils its new MacBook Pro lineup later this year. Even though earlier rumors suggested the new MacBook Air could be announced in early 2022, the updated chip and the new design may mean it is still worth waiting for in spite of a later than expected launch. For those that don't want to wait, the current 2020 model still benefits from the upgrades in power and performance associated with Apple's M1 chip.

In the meantime, the macOS Monterey beta 7 update released earlier in the month seemingly revealed a few details about upcoming MacBook Pro models. The update reportedly leaked two new screen resolutions, suggesting that the larger MacBook Pro might feature the highest resolution ever seen in a MacBook. At 3024 x 1964 and 3456 x 2234 pixels, the leaked resolutions are also in line with some earlier rumors of two new screen sizes for the upcoming MacBook Pro lineup.
