Iron Man's Magic Excalibur Armor is Superman's Worst Nightmare

Superman is one of the strongest superheroes of all time, but one of Iron Man's most powerful armors is the perfect match for the Man of Steel. In the Iron Man: Legacy of Doom miniseries, Tony Stark takes on Doctor Doom, who becomes even stronger thanks to acquiring Excalibur. However, Iron Man fights back by obtaining the scabbard of Excalibur, making him invulnerable and powered by magic - the perfect combination to take down Superman.

In Iron Man: Legacy of Doom by David Michelinie, Bob Layton, Ron Lim, Chris Sotomayor, and Artmonkeys Studios Lettering, Tony discovers data from a suit he is about to destroy that shows a fight against Doctor Doom he didn't remember happening. The encounter turns out to be real, as he slowly remembers Doctor Doom's quest for Excalibur, where he tricked Iron Man to help him and attempted to trap him in Hell. In the process, Tony acquires the scabbard of Excalibur, making the longtime Avenger invulnerable. Iron Man quickly found out he also gained magic powers as part of the upgrade.

In the series fourth and final issue, Iron Man and Doctor Doom are forced to team up against an interdimensional eye monster. Stark starts to remember the battle and how he shot powerful beams of light (not particle blasts) at the monster, as Doom reveals the scabbard changed him and gave him magical abilities. Doom suggests Iron Man cast a spell to turn the ground below the beast weak, so he falls into it. Despite initially believing he wasn't capable of "hocus-pocus," Stark succeeds with the blast. After discovering the monster could heal itself, Merlin arrives on the scene and tells Iron Man and Doom they need to combine Excalibur and the scabbard. Doom stabs Iron Man with Excalibur, creating a magical blast so powerful it kills the monster.

Following the monster's defeat, both Iron Man and Doctor Doom are stripped of their powers from the scabbard and Excalibur. However, the moment showed Stark's armor would be perfect fighting against another hero, Superman. Considering the Man of Steel's weakness against magic, as well as Iron Man's newfound invulnerability with the scabbard, there's a real chance Stark could take down Superman with the magical suit.

With Iron Man more invulnerable than ever and having magical abilities, he would make for an excellent opponent against Superman. The Excalibur armor wasn't designed to take down Superman, but it might as well have been. Ultimately, Merlin took away the upgrade and Iron Man and Doctor Doom's memories for good reason. But, the armor was insanely powerful and would have been Superman's worst nightmare.
