Guardians of the Galaxy Lets Rocket Grow in Ways the MCU Won't

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Guardians of the Galaxy #18

Recent issues of Guardians of the Galaxy from Marvel Comics have allowed Rocket Raccoon to grow and evolve, straying from his depiction in the MCU. During The Last Annihilation, Rocket has stepped up as a major player and hero, and Nathan Summers' Cable even confirms that Rocket's legacy in the future is that of a legend that's inspired many (including Cable himself). However, the MCU's Guardians of the Galaxy films feature Rocket struggling to get along with his teammates, such as when he's arguing with Peter Quill about who the best pilot is (to the whole team's detriment).

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2Rocket is still a rather large jerk to his fellow teammates despite the growth the Guardians had in their first adventure. Essentially, his self-centered attitude continued to win out for the majority of the film, such as when he stole rare Anulax batteries from the Sovereign people, landing the Guardians in all kinds of trouble. He made things even worse he started arguing with Star-Lord about who should be flying their ship to get them out of danger, resulting in the Milano crash-landing.

In contrast, Marvel Comics flips the script in Guardians of the Galaxy #18 from Al Ewing and Juan Frigeri. Despite Rocket having brought together and fabricating a planet-sized gun with a massive anti-magic bullet to be used against Dormammu during The Last Annihilation, Rocket did not insist on firing the impressive weapon. Instead, he was gracious and humble enough to realize that the preferable Guardian to do the deed with the best chance for success was Gamora, showcasing the growth he's had in comparison to the MCU's version of Rocket Raccoon.

Not only is this a pretty cool deviation from the big screen that highlights comic book Rocket's evolution, but the recent Cable Reloaded #1 from Al Ewing and Robert Quinn doubles down. Cable was an instrumental agent in helping secure the gun for The Last Annihilation, and as soon as he learned that the idea came from Rocket he was unquestionably on board. Apparently, future generations consider Rocket to be one of the greatest heroes and tacticians of all time, which further proves that he can be more than the jerk thief he's been portrayed as in the MCU.

Thankfully, Avengers: Endgame saw Rocket determined to get his friends back, an indication that he genuinely understood the importance of the family he had after he lost it all during Infinity War. Now that the Guardians are all back together post-Endgame, here's hoping Rocket Raccoon can experience the same levels of lasting and consistent growth in the MCU going forward that he's had in Marvel Comics' Guardians of the Galaxy series.
