Space Jam 3 Updates: Release Date, Cast, Story, Will It Happen?

Twenty-five years after Michael Jordan took over the big screen in Space Jam, NBA’s biggest modern star, Lebron James, takes over the role with help from the Looney Tunes, so what can be expected from Space Jam 3? In the original movie, Michael Jordan was recruited to help the Tunes battle for their freedom against monsters in space by beating them in a basketball game. Space Jam 2 modernizes the context of the need for NBA’s top player by having Lebron James and his son getting trapped in a video game algorithm’s virtual space, The Server-Verse, recruiting the Looney Tunes to help free his family.

Similar to Space Jam’s first installment, the sequel features a variety of celebrity and NBA player cameos as Lebron takes on his most high-stakes game yet. While most of the celebrities and basketball players, including Michael Jordan himself, that starred in Space Jam were live-action versions of themselves, Space Jam: A New Legacy animates them to match the Looney Tunes. The animated voice cast of Tunes also features a variety of notable actors including Zendaya, Gabriel Iglesias, and Rosario Dawson.

Space Jam may have waited a quarter of a decade to produce a sequel, but the open-ended, stand-alone nature of the franchise leaves room for future adaptations that could happen sooner than later. Here’s what to expect from a possible follow-up with Space Jam 3.

Space Jam is one of Warner Bros.'s most significant properties as it combines pop-culture sports legacies with historical franchises like Looney Tunes, so there’s no reason the never-aging Tunes won’t return for a third movie with a new sports icon. Space Jam: A New Legacy director Malcolm D. Lee has even hinted that he would be open to Space Jam 3, and there’s no shortage of iconic athletes to choose from. With a combined streaming and theatrical release, it’s difficult to analyze the blockbuster success of Space Jam 2, though a bombed sequel likely won’t stop Warner Bros. from continuing the franchise.

Since Space Jam took 25 years to make a sequel, a third most likely won’t be released within the next couple of years. If taking on basketball in the next movie, there would need to be ample time to establish Lebron James’ iconic successor within the NBA. Alternatively, if Space Jam took a new turn and followed a new sport for its high-stakes match, Space Jam 3 could release much sooner. Either way, it'll take at least a few more years until a third installment is released.

If Space Jam continues to modernize the context of its franchise, the premise of Space Jam 3 would likely follow an all-star female athlete with a significant following. The first two movies entailed high-stakes basketball games, though Space Jam could propel its franchise into a wider sports base by delving into alternate sports. If another sequel went with a star female athlete, the team-based icons with the biggest fan bases are soccer players, so Warner Bros. and Space Jam could partner with footballers like Alex Morgan. To target an athlete with more widespread notoriety, Space Jam could also implement a high-stakes match with one of the greatest tennis players of all time, Serena Williams. Alternately, the Space Jam 2 director himself explained he would want Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson to lead Space Jam 3, likely in a wrestling-based adventure.

Space Jam 3 could go back to its roots, involving a premise similar to the original movie where a retired big-name athlete is recruited by the Looney Tunes. If Space Jam dove into a new sport, one athlete with a multiple-decades-long consistent following is legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk. Taking on a new sport that can focus primarily on one player like basketball wouldn’t be easy, so Space Jam 3 could take its franchise to the next level by recruiting Olympic athletes for a space-based Olympics, joining the Looney Tunes against new other-worldly foes in a variety of games.
