Naked Singularity Trailer: John Boyega Is A Lawyer Turning To Crime

Screen Media has unveiled the trailer for Naked Singularity, starring John Boyega as a defense lawyer who turns to crime after losing his first case. The comedic crime thriller is based on the debut novel of the same name from Sergio De La Paya, which won the PEN Prize for Debut Fiction in 2013. Alongside Boyega, the ensemble cast for the film includes Olivia Cooke, Bill Skarsgård, Ed Skrein, Tim Blake Nelson and Linda Lavin.

The story centers on Casi, a promising young New York City public defender who finds his idealism beginning to crack under the daily injustices of the justice system he's trying to fix from within. As he continues to lose faith, Casi gets himself roped into a dangerous high-stakes drug heist by an unpredictable former client in an effort to beat the broken system at its own game. Development on Naked Singularity first began in late 2018 with Ridley Scott and Law & Order's Dick Wolf attached as executive producers. After being acquired by Screen Media following its San Francisco International Film Festival debut in April, the studio is building anticipation for the film.

Naked Singularity was something of a landmark when it was first announced to be in development as it marked Boyega's first film role in the wake of the conclusion of the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Given the creative problems the Golden Globe winner had with the Disney tentpole, the upcoming crime thriller certainly felt like a better step forward to bring his voice and presence to the screen, and the first trailer feels like the proper proof. Though its plot may initially seem reminiscent of the Michael Douglas-led Falling Down, Boyega's portrayal of the central character does look to be one of his most grounded and organically humorous in years.

Paired alongside his Golden Globe-winning turn in Steve McQueen's Small Axe, Boyega's role in Naked Singularity is proving very enticing. The trailer also offers a glimpse at the exciting direction on display from co-writer Chase Palmer in his feature debut, and his grip on its blend of darker comedy and timely themes. Only time will tell if the film can reach the high bar set by the trailer when it releases on August 13.
