BvS As Next Movie After Man Of Steel Was Mistake, Says Matthew Vaughn

Matthew Vaughn, the top choice to direct a scrapped sequel to Man of Steel, reveals that he believes making Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice after MOS was a mistake. Establishing the DC Extended Universe, Man of Steel was released in June 2013 to mixed reviews. Released in March 2016, BvS continued the story of the DCEU by introducing Batman and Wonder Woman. However, the Batman/Superman crossover film garnered worse reviews than its predecessor.

BvS combined the worlds of the superheroes and was meant to be a worthy lead-in to Justice League. Warner Bros.'s goal was to establish the same kind of success that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has seen. While BvS grossed more money than MoS- primarily because Batman was featured- it failed to capture the allure and quality present in previous DC films like The Dark KnightJustice League's poor box office results can be attributed to people's distaste for BvS.

In an interview with TheWrap, Vaughn revealed he was opposed to the direction DC took in the mid-2010s. He was being considered to direct Man of Steel 2 in 2017 until there was so much disdain surrounding Justice League. He had pitched what he said was a "colorful, fun Superman movie" before MoS was produced. This was opposed to the dark tone that eventual director Zach Snyder established. This is what Vaughn had to say about the decision to make BvS:

"I just thought it was a mistake putting the Batman vibe into the Superman world. I just think they’re two separate — they’re just not relatable in any way, in my mind. It should be fun."

Vaughn says that he still desires to make a Superman film like he wants it to be made. He and Superman actor Henry Cavill already have a relationship after working together on Argylle. Vaughn says that Cavill is "unbelievable" in this film. The director has experience in the superhero genre, having directed films such as X-Men: First Class and Kick-Ass. If this film comes to fruition, it is safe to say Vaughn would make it significantly less dark and contrast with elements of MoS and BvS. That is if DC approves of this direction.

Ultimately, Warner Bros. made many mistakes in producing their DC Extended Universe. There is certainly a valid argument that Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice was a mistake. It could also be surmised that a Ben Affleck Batman movie should have been produced first, so the film would not have to balance being a team-up movie and origin story. Some of these mistakes were pretty significant because even Warner Bros. has admitted to them.
