Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Not Coming To Consoles Until PC Version Improves

The crew at Frontier Developments is delaying the console ports for Elite Dangerous: Odyssey until the PC version resolves its most significant issues. Elite Dangerous' Odyssey expansion launched in May to abysmal review scores and poor fan reception due to a plethora of performance-related troubles. Notably, the paid DLC has suffered from crashing woes, server errors, game-breaking bugs, and even hiccups that interfere with older content.

In a Frontier Forums post (via PCGamesN), Frontier Developments CEO and Founder David Braben noted that work on Odyssey's console ports hasn't progressed as previously planned because of the team's focus on addressing lingering PC issues. While efforts to fix the PC version will improve Odyssey on other platforms in the future, "dates and details" regarding the console iterations will undergo change. Thus, PlayStation and Xbox players must wait a while longer. Braben wrote in part: "Only when we feel that the foundation of the PC release is solid, will we be able to re-lay our console roadmap on top. Elite Dangerous: Odyssey is an important step on a complicated journey, and we must get this right before we can consider moving on to these new platforms."

Frontier Developments' decision to shelve the console versions for the time being may disappoint some, but it's ultimately the right move. As Braben mentioned in his update, Odyssey marks a big step for Elite Dangerous as it allows players to explore on foot for the first time. The focus now needs to center on ensuring all players have a stable experience to dive into once all is said and done.
