Based on true events, The Crown covers a lot of ground. The characters—and the country—go through a lot from the beginning to the end of each season.
The first two seasons focus a lot on the struggles Elizabeth has with balancing being Queen and her interpersonal relationships, mostly with Margaret and Phillip. The latter two seasons broaden the scope of focus where the royal family is concerned, with episodes concentrated on Charles and Diana, as well as Margaret and Tony.
8 Olding (Season 3, Episode 1) 8.0
"Olding" focuses on Elizabeth's worry over speculation that her new Prime Minister has KGB ties. It's also the first episode with the new cast, signifying a new era for the show.
Another way that this episode works as a transition to something different from the past two seasons is that it includes the death of Winston Churchill, a central character up until this point. We also catch up with Margaret and Tony, who are having struggles in their marriage. Elizabeth later learns that her Prime Minister isn't a mole, but that a man working inside Buckingham Palace is.
7 Misadventure (Season 2, Episode 1) 8.2
Season two picks up by diving right into one of the main conflicts of season one, those being the problems in Phillip and Elizabeth's marriage. It takes place over the span of a few months, and they seem to be getting along well before he leaves for his royal tour until Elizabeth discovers evidence that he's having an affair. Things aren't going much better for Elizabeth in a professional sense, as Eden struggles to gain control of a situation in the Suez Canal.
6 Cri De Coeur (Season 3, Episode 10) 8.4
Margaret begins an affair that ends up in the papers. The royal family reacts strongly and demands that Margaret cut her personal vacations short and return home, where she's been unhappy in her marriage to Tony.
Margaret reaches a breaking point and attempts suicide. This leads to a beautiful, emotional exchange between her and her sister, the two of whom haven't had the warmest relationship. Helena Bonham Carter and Olivia Colman are incredible always, but especially in this episode.
5 Wolferton Splash (Season 1, Episode 1) 8.5
The series begins with Phillip renouncing his former titles so that he can be considered suitable to marry Elizabeth. The first happy years of their marriage are covered here, while her father, the King, is suffering from rapidly deteriorating health. Geroge realizes that he doesn't have much time left and begins to put things in motion to ensure that Elizabeth will be ready to take his place.
4 Gold Stick (Season 4, Episode 1) 8.5
Two important meetings occur in the season four premiere: Charles meets Diana, and Elizabeth meets Margaret Thatcher. It's clear from the start that Thatcher will rub Elizabeth the wrong way, which comes as a disappointment to her since she'd hoped for a positive experience with her first female Prime Minister.
Mountbatten dies in an attack from the IRA, right after expressing to Charles that he needs to move on from his affair with Camilla. This inspires him to start dating Diana.
3 Mystery Man (Season 2, Episode 10) 8.5
A bunch of shady information about an osteopath by the name of Ward comes out in the news. This doesn't seem important, but Phillip is rumored to have been interacting with the man, who's known for arranging discreet, illicit activities for powerful men.
This stresses out a pregnant Elizabeth, who takes some time to herself before confronting Phillip about his indiscretions. Phillip reaffirms his commitment to Elizabeth, and the season ends with the birth of their son, Edward.
2 Gloriana (Season 1, Episode 10) 8.6
"Gloriana" focuses mainly on two interpersonal sources of conflict for Elizabeth: that with her sister, Margaret, and her husband, Phillip. Margaret wishes to marry an older divorcee, but Parliament and the Church of England don't approve.
Elizabeth chooses to take their advice and ask that Margaret and Peter break of their engagement, which they do, breaking Margaret's heart. Phillip's attitude is getting out of hand, so Elizabeth takes advice again and agrees to ask him to do a royal tour, hoping that the time apart will give him room to breathe and settle down.
1 War (Season 4, Episode 10) 8.9
Season four ends with Margaret Thatcher's resignation from her position as Prime Minister. Diana takes a solo trip that is a great success, which infuriates the very insecure Charles.
He's also mad at her for having an affair, even though he's been having one since they first got together. His parents try to get their marriage back on track, but it's clear that Charles isn't going to change, and Diana won't be getting any help.
