Developer Cryptic Studios has announced that Magic: Legends will be shut down in October 2021. The action RPG title, set in the world of Magic: The Gathering, was released as an open beta in just March 2021. Cryptic has assured players that full refunds will be issued to those who made in-game purchases within the game.
In March 2021 Magic: Legends entered open beta on the Epic Games Store. The title's gameplay was regarded as similar to other loot-based games like Diablo, and Legends was set firmly within the large expansive universe of Wizards of the Coast's Magic: The Gathering card game. The game was then anticipated for a console release by the end of 2021, although little information was provided about this full release. Much of the feedback from this open beta was negative, with particular criticisms being leveled at the game's performance and monetization practices.
It was announced by Cryptic Studios on Tuesday that Magic: Legends will be shut down completely on October 31, 2021. A developer blog post admits that the game "missed the mark," but the studio expresses gratitude at the opportunity to work within the world of Magic: The Gathering. Cryptic promises that players who spent money within the game during the open beta period will be fully refunded, and the in-game Zen Shop will be closed immediately. Magic: Legends servers will remain operational until the game is officially shut down on October 31.
While quite a bit of negative feedback from Magic: Legends' beta was negative, it comes as quite a shock that the game is already being shut down. Screen Rant sat down for an interview with Winter Mullenix, the game's Senior Writer, in May 2021. During the discussion Mullenix expressed great excitement for the lore of Magic: The Gathering and suggested that more of the world would be explored through Magic: Legends. The fact that the game's developers had quite detailed plans for the future, including the next big piece of content in Act IV, suggests that the game's cancellation may have been a recent and sudden development.
While Magic: Legends did receive a fair bit of criticism, gathering and processing negative feedback is an important and natural part of any beta release. Had this feedback been taken into account, the action role-playing game's full release may have been quite successful. Unfortunately Cryptic Studios will never have the chance to reach this full release, as Magic: Legends will be officially shut down on October 31.
Magic: Legends is available on PC until October 31.
