Princess Leia is not only an icon of the Star Wars franchise, but a cinematic figure that transcends that galaxy far, far away. She has been a role model for decades, and inspired countless generations with her bravery, intelligence, and enduring belief that good will always triumph over evil. She may have first appeared as a classic "damsel in distress," but she quickly proved that she was in command of her own destiny, and went from being the Princess of Alderaan to a Rebel Alliance hero against the Empire, and finally a General in the Resistance against the First Order.
Her infamous career as a freedom fighter aside, she was a respected Senator, a mother to Ben Solo, and a student of the Force with a strong connection to its power. It's for all these reasons that Leia is an incredibly complex character, which provides a variety of personas for fans to cosplay. Every costume she wears in the Star Wars films provides a different insight into her personality and her story, and these cosplayers have captured that.
10 GENERAL ORGANA
When fans first saw Princess Leia again in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, she was a General serving the Resistance. Though the years had weathered her, she was still strong, resilient, and full of her usual feisty spirit. She was once again the hero of a galactic rebellion, but at the same time a worried mother.
This cosplay by Federkiel captures the weight of the galaxy that rests on General Organa's shoulders, highlighting every detail from her new hairstyle to her pensive expression.
9 REBEL HERO
Eagle-eyed Star Wars fans have long debated the marksmanship skills of the original trilogy's main characters, with Han, Leia, Luke, and Chewie all having spent plenty of time blasting Imperial troops. Princess Leia was calculated to have a 66% hit rate, landing 8 out of 12 shots.
This action-packed cosplay by julietheadventurer depicts Leia staring down the barrel of a blaster, presumably taking aim at a few of the Empire's jarheads. She showcases Leia's determination, and even gives a nod to the hairstyle she wore during the medal ceremony at the end of Star Wars.
8 HUTT SLAYER
The outfit Leia wears in the beginning of Return of the Jedi is one of the most popular ensembles ever to be cosplayed. While it may look uncomplicated due to its diminutive and delicate nature, it can be difficult to pull off with the same aplomb as Leia, who managed to use its maneuverability to her advantage when she killed Jabba the Hutt.
Here Krissy Victory, who was notably given a shout-out for cosplaying as a genderbent Finn by the real Finn himself (John Boyega), portrays Leia as she appeared at the foot of Jabba's dais, ready to make the giant slug feel the pull of her chains.
7 A NEW HOPE
There are a number of iconic moments in the original Star Wars, but one of the most poignant early on involves a courageous Princess Leia furtively sneaking about in the cargo hold of the Tantive IV, preparing to insert the Death Star plans into R2-D2 and blast any stormtroopers who get in her way.
Here, Seamripper Cosplay has perfectly brought to life the moment Star Wars fans first meet Leia, as she cautiously lets down her hood to reveal her beautiful features and iconic hairstyle.
6 BOUSHH
Leia is an integral part of Han Solo's rescue in Return of the Jedi, infiltrating Jabba's Palace dressed like a bounty hunter who goes by "Boushh". Even Han doesn't recognize her until she removes her helmet after freeing him from his carbonite prison.
Cosplayer kiddo-cosplay, who specializes in strong and resilient female hero characters, has spared no detail in recreating a nearly cinema-accurate version of Leia's disguise, complete with thermal detonator.
5 ICE PRINCESS IN THE CLOUDS
Leia had a number of costume changes based on her environment in The Empire Strikes Back. In the first half of the film, she eschewed a dress for the cold weather gear necessary on the ice planet Hoth. Later in Cloud City, she wore a white padded ensemble with her hair in twin hanging braids.
Both of her signature ensembles from the film are showcased by thatbloodypirate, who seamlessly changes from Leia's Hoth look into her Cloud City get-up, maintaining Leia's same determined expression.
4 ENDOR
As one of the ground troops leading the assault on the shield generator, Princess Leia was part of a task force comprised of Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Chewie. Their plans were thwarted by the Ewoks, but the furry inhabitants of Endor soon became their unlikely allies.
Here cosplayer Amy Elizabeth has jumped straight into the action of Return of the Jedi, depicting Leia as she appeared shooting at Imperial biker scouts, just before she stole their speeder bikes.
3 BIKINI BEAUTY
Arguably one of the most recognizable outfits that Princess Leia wears in the original trilogy is her "slave" outfit. The Alderaan aristocrat doesn't let being chained to Jabba the Hutt humiliate her, however, and she uses the dexterity provided in her ensemble to kill the crime-lord.
Cosplayer Ivy95 has faithfully recreated Leia's provocative outfit from Return of the Jedi, complete with Salacious B. Crumb, Jabba's notoriously cackling court jester. The backdrop is particularly appealing, as it perfectly captures the hazy bowels of Jabba's Palace.
2 CLASSIC PRINCESS
Like her birth mother, Leia was one of the youngest members elected to the Senate. She adjusted to political life quickly, fending off the Empire while simultaneously funneling information and resources to the Rebel Alliance, never knowing that the Force was strong in her family.
This cosplayer has recreated the ensemble Leia wears in A New Hope, down to the last detail and accessory. She's seen here with a different astromech droid than R2, and the corner of a large "walking carpet."
1 THE GENERAL AT THE BATTLE OF CRAIT
After losing the entire Resistance fleet, it seemed that its fire had all but gone out of the galaxy, with not even a distress missive from General Organa proving enough to rouse sympathy for its cause. Still, Leia stood tall and regal in her robes, and told her troops to continue to believe in hope.
Cosplayer Kelldar brought together this cinematic cosplay of General Organa at the Battle of Crait for Dragon Con 2019, and got every aspect correct, from the earrings and bracelet to the drape of the cloak and the style of Leia's hair.
