The Star Trek crews on star ships and stations usually have their hands full. With new, unexpected threats and possibly hostile alien species, it's often hard to find time to build romantic relationships. Some of the crew members managed it better than others. But even when they found someone special, it wasn't always guaranteed they would stay together.
And then there were some instances when the romances were downright toxic or just plain weird. In that case, it was only for the best when they fell apart. Sometimes the fans were able to guess much sooner than the characters that these two wouldn't live together happily ever after.
10 Captain Kirk And Edith Keeler
Star Trek: The Original Series has a lot of iconic episodes. But The City on the Edge of Forever is one of the best ones. Kirk and Spock travel in time to the 1930s to find McCoy. Kirk falls for the kind and smart Edith Keeler. Unfortunately, this romance was doomed from the start. For the future to happen the way it has to, Edith had to die. And even if she didn't, it was highly unlikely these two would get their happy ending. After all, both of them came from a completely different era. It's unlikely Kirk would abandon his ship to stay with Edith. And she might not follow him to Enterprise, either.
9 Data And Borg Queen
The Borg Queen tried to seduce Data and convince him to join her side. But this relationship would never work for multiple reasons, and the fans knew it. For one, Data and the Borg Queen stood on the opposite sides. Also, their biological differences could prove too great. And in the end, Data would never leave his crew behind. It was foolish that the Borg Queen thought she could persuade him to tell her what she wanted to know.
8 Captain Janeway And Q
Q tried to seduce Captain Janeway and persuade her she should be the mother of his child. Even if Janeway did like Q in this way, he didn't choose the best approach how to express his affections. Q simply didn't understand how humans thought and felt. It was no wonder Janeway declined the offer and Q had to look elsewhere for the future mother of his child.
7 Miles O'Brien And Kira Nerys
Miles and Kira were never a couple in the traditional meaning of the word. However, they flirted a little and there were a few tension-filled moments between them. It wasn't such a stretch to guess that it wouldn't lead anywhere, though.
The only reason why they grew closer in the first place was that Kira carried Miles's baby as a surrogate mom. Miles was married to Keiko at the time and he and Kira would have never worked out.
6 Data And Tasha Yar
Data didn't have the best of luck in romantic relationships. Possibly because he struggles with comprehending human emotions. His romance with Tasha ended up shortly after it had started but that didn't surprise anyone. They had a brief fling under extraordinary circumstances when Tasha wasn't quite herself. She didn't want to be reminded of the time she and Data spent together.
5 T'Pol And Trip Tucker
T'Pol and Trip weren't bad, as far as couples go. Despite the cultural differences between them they understood and respected each other. Unfortunately, there was one main reason why their romance was never going to have an entirely happy ending. Even if they stayed together, Vulcans have a much longer life span than most humans. T'Pol would outlive Trip by many years. And considering his premature death in the show's finale, it turned out the fans who suspected these two wouldn't get their happily ever after, were right.
4 Kirk And Uhura
In both the older and renewed series, Kirk and Uhura didn't get together - but they had their moments. In the original series, Kirk kissed Uhura but it was under duress and they never mentioned it again.
And in the renewed films, Kirk heavily flirted with Uhura but she just wasn't interested in him. Instead, she got together with Spock.
3 Quark And Grilka
Quark and Grilka had one of the funniest relationships on Star Trek. Their whirlwind romance included Grilka's brother's death, angry Klingons, jealous Worf, who admired Grilka, some fighting, an elaborate lie, and even more angry Klingons. Quark and Grilka seemed to have gotten along well enough, considering the cultural differences between their species. But the audience knew that this relationship wouldn't last forever. In the end, the abyss between them was just too big.
2 B'Elanna Torres And Vorik
Some of the worst relationships on Star Trek happened when somebody wouldn't take no for an answer. Vorik was a young Vulcan who worked alongside B'Elanna. When his Pon Farr hit, he decided he and B'Elanna would be perfect together. B'Elanna wasn't interested but Vorik wouldn't hear of it. It felt like a relief when she finally snapped him out of it - by beating the crap out of Vorik. To be honest, he had it coming.
1 Spock And T'Pring
Speaking of Pon Farr, there's also Spock and his would-be-wife T'Pring. Spock and T'Pring were engaged from their respective childhoods. But they didn't know each other at all. When Spock's Pon Farr hit and he returned to Vulcan to marry T'Pring, she rejected him. The episode Amok Time belongs among the best but it was clear from the start that Spock wouldn't end up married to a woman he barely knew.
