Monster Hunter Rise: How To Capture Monsters | Screen Rant

Not all of the battles in Monster Hunter Rise need to be won through brutality, as it's possible to capture a monster in the field. There are more steps to capturing a monster than slaying one, but the players are given more rewards for doing so.

The monsters in the Monster Hunter series are usually outnumbered by groups of hunters. The odds are still in the monster's favor, as they are a lot more agile than the hunters and they have massive AoE on their attacks. A team of hunters can only take three faints before the quest ends, which means that it can be hard enough to survive a straight-up battle. The chaos of a hunt means that it's easy for players to accidentally kill a monster while in the process of trying to capture it, as things can get that hectic in the heat of battle.

The hunters who want to capture a monster will need to bring specific items into battle with them. In order to capture a monster, a hunter should bring a Pitfall Trap, a Shock Trap, and as many Tranq Bombs as they can carry. Hunters who use long-ranged weapons should also bring Tranq Ammo if they have any.

There are three stages to capturing a monster in Monster Hunter Rise.

  • Weaken It - The monster needs to be weakened through combat. Once it's ready to be captured, the colored icon next to it on the map will change to blue. It will also show visible signs of weakness, such as limping or gasping for air.
  • Set A Trap - There are two types of traps: Pitfall Trap and Shock Trap. The former creates a pit that the monster will fall into and the latter stuns it with electricity. The trap has to be placed onto the field and the monster has to walk into it for it to activate. The monster will only stay incapacitated for a short period of time, so the player should prepare for the next step as soon as the trap is placed.
  • Sedate It - Once the monster is in the trap, the player then needs to throw Tranq Bombs (hold LZ to aim) or shoot it with Tranq Ammo if the hunter has a ranged weapon. It should only take a few Tranqs to knock it out.

Capturing a monster is generally quicker than killing it in battle. This is especially useful in missions where the hunters need to face multiple monsters, as it's easier if one can be taken out of commission as soon as possible. The hunters will receive more items from capturing a monster, including exclusive body parts/gems that can only be acquired from a capture. As such, it's always advised to try and capture a monster whenever possible.
