Hawkeye Show Will Introduce Daredevil Character Echo To The MCU

Marvel's Hawkeye TV show will introduce Maya Lopez, aka Echo, a character closely associated with Daredevil, to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Jeremy Renner's Clint Barton is finally stepping up to a leading role in an MCU property, nearly a decade after his debut. Hawkeye will be Marvel Studios' chance to finally explore all facets of Barton's life, with his backstory, time as Ronin in Avengers: Endgame, and current focus on training Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) all set for the series.

All of this is made possible thanks to Disney+ giving the MCU a place to explore long-form episodic storytelling. Marvel Studios will use each of these shows to not only prop up existing characters or shine a spotlight on new ones, but each will also feature a wide variety of characters from the comics. The recent announcement of Hawkeye's cast brought confirmation that this will continue with Florence Pugh returning as Yelena Belova from Black Widow, but other comic characters like Swordsman and Clown were revealed too.

The report from Variety that revealed Hawkeye's cast also included the addition of newcomer Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez, aka Echo. The Native American deaf character has strong ties to Clint Barton in the comics, as she went on to take the Ronin mantle after him. But, Maya also has deep connections to Daredevil. She was introduced in Daredevil #9 in 1999 and raised by Daredevil's arch-nemesis Kingpin after he murdered her father. Wilson Fisk went on to train Echo to become a lethal assassin and sent her after Daredevil for a time.

The inclusion of Echo in Hawkeye was rumored a while back, but how she factors into the series will become a larger topic now that her casting is confirmed. Echo hasn't appeared in live-action before, as Ben Affleck's Daredevil movie didn't include her and she was left out of Netflix's show during its three-season run. This is likely how the MCU was able to already have plans to use Echo, as Daredevil's rights officially reverted to Marvel Studios recently after the reported two-year moratorium of the show's cancellation passed.

It remains to be seen how Marvel Studios handles Echo's introduction to the MCU in Hawkeye. They could have planned on changing aspects of her origin to avoid Daredevil connections, but that might not be necessary now. Echo can now be a potential bridge for the MCU to get to Daredevil or Kingpin in the very near future. It would be unwise to expect either of them to appear in Hawkeye at this stage though. Echo should have a role in the MCU beyond the Disney+ show, so any ties to Daredevil can still happen in the future.
