The MCU Will Have Three Captain Marvels By 2022 | Screen Rant

The Marvel Cinematic Universe will have three different Captain Marvels by 2022, though not all of them will necessarily be superheroes – for a while, at least. The MCU has been bringing various characters from Marvel Comics to the big screen since 2008, and while it has had female superheroes since Iron Man 2, which introduced Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), it wasn’t until 2019 when this connected universe had its first female-led superhero film with Captain Marvel.

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel introduced Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), a U.S. Air Force fighter pilot who became a member of an elite Kree military unit after a test flight went wrong and left her exposed to the energy of the Tesseract. Captain Marvel was a critical and financial hit, and Danvers returned in Avengers: Endgame, where she helped the surviving heroes kill Thanos at the beginning of the movie and later returned right on time to help the entire MCU defeat the Mad Titan and his armies in the Battle of Earth. Carol Danvers will return in her second solo film, simply titled Captain Marvel 2 (at least for now), in 2022, but by then, the MCU will already have a total of three Captain Marvels, though not all of them on its film side.

“Captain Marvel” is a name that various characters in the Marvel Universe have used, the first one being a man named Mar-Vell (Earth alias Walter Lawson). The second character to use the Captain Marvel title in the comics was Monica Rambeau, a police lieutenant who gained superpowers after being bombarded by extradimensional energy. Rambeau was a member of the Avengers and even led the team at some point, but she eventually ceded the Captain Marvel name to Genis-Vell, the genetically-engineered son of Mar-Vell and Elysius. After that, she used different names, such as Photon, Pulsar, and Spectrum. Monica and her mother Maria were introduced in Captain Marvel, as Maria is one of Carol Danvers’ oldest friends from her pilot days, and was so close to her and her daughter that Monica called her “auntie Carol”. The Monica Rambeau seen in Captain Marvel was a child, but she will return in WandaVision now as an adult, though whether she will become a superhero like Carol or not remains unknown.

Before Carol Danvers used the name “Captain Marvel”, she was known as Ms. Marvel, and this name has also been used by different characters, the most recent one being Kamala Khan, a 16-year-old Pakistani-American girl who looked up to Danvers. Kahn has shapeshifting abilities as she has Inhuman genes, and took on the mantle of Ms. Marvel when Danvers became Captain Marvel. Kahn will join the MCU in her own TV series, simply titled Ms. Marvel, to be released on Disney+ in 2022. While Kamala Khan hasn’t used the name Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel was created as a female Captain Marvel counterpoint, but with Danvers breaking the gender barrier and taking the title of Captain Marvel following Mar-Vell’s death, Ms. Marvel is effectively the same thing. Kamala Khan is expected to appear in MCU films following her introduction in Ms. Marvel, so it’s very possible she will work alongside Brie Larson’s character at some point.

Having three different Captain Marvels in the MCU makes way for a lot of possibilities, including a team-up, and it would make it possible for the title of Captain Marvel to continue as part of the MCU if the studio decides to retire Carol Danvers at some point, as it did with Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson and the title of Captain America – but most importantly, the MCU will have more female superheroes, and not just on the film side of this universe.
