Already available on Samsung smart TVs and select Galaxy phones, support for Samsung TV Plus has now been expanded to even more of the company's smartphones. The free video service delivers a blend of channels to users with no subscription, fees, or need to sign up with a credit card. By adding this service to a Galaxy phone, the user will be able to access video content at home or on the go.
Originally launched on smart TVs, Samsung TV Plus provides access to a diverse mix of television channels through the app, which comes pre-installed on every Samsung smart TV. The service provides both live TV and on-demand streaming, and even has 4K offerings. Earlier this year, Samsung expanded this service to a handful of Galaxy smartphones by making the app available on the Google Play Store. That expansion enabled Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy S20, Galaxy Note 10, and Galaxy S10 owners to gain access to the service.
Now, Samsung is bringing the free video service to even more of its mobile devices. The Galaxy Z Fold 2, Galaxy Z Flip, and the Galaxy Fold, as well as the Galaxy S9, Note 9, and Galaxy A series phones all now support Samsung TV Plus. With these additions, the majority of recent Samsung phones, as well as any Samsung smart TV from 2016 to 2020, are compatible. For TV owners, the app is already installed on Samsung TVs while those choosing to watch on their mobile devices will need to download the app from either the Galaxy Store or the Google Play Store. From there, they can start watching immediately, providing they have a reliable internet connection. Users can also choose to use a Samsung account to personalize their streaming experience for their smart TV, mobile device, or both.
Samsung developed Samsung TV Plus as an alternative to other paid viewing options, enabling users to start watching the moment they turn their smart TV on without having to login to Netflix or wait for their satellite or cable to be set up. Now offering 150 channels in the US with the promise of more to come, Samsung TV Plus appears to be a decent choice for when users have no other options. The question remains, however, if users will view Samsung TV Plus as a viable streaming option or more of a last resort when they don’t renew their Hulu subscription.
The biggest pull of the service is that it’s truly free, but it's also ad-supported. The channel selection is also not exactly premium, with offerings being either niche channels that mirror those found in a typical cable subscription, or channels that are dedicated to specific shows. While users might not find anything groundbreaking or essential on Samsung TV Plus, they can still catch the news or find a good movie or show with no additional costs involved.
In reality, Samsung TV Plus is unlikely to be a real alternative for anyone with a subscription to a major streaming service. However, with an ever-growing list of channels and content, Samsung claims there is something for everyone and with a little searching, users may find something to pass the time with. Whether it's on their Samsung smart TV or their Galaxy series smartphone.
