Even as the PlayStation 5 arrives in the homes of players around the world, Ghost of Tsushima continues to break records for Sony's last game system. To date, the PlayStation 4 exclusive has sold 5 million copies and counting, a feat made even more impressive by the fact that the game came out less than six months ago.
Ghost of Tsushima was developed by Sucker Punch Productions, the studio otherwise best known for the Infamous series, and was released earlier this summer to overwhelmingly positive reception. It was to be the last major PS4 exclusive and as soon as it became available, Sony knew it had a hit on its hands. In just its first three days on the market, Ghost of Tsushima sold over 2.4 million copies and word of mouth coupled with rave reviews kept the game financially successful long after launch.
A tweet from the head of PlayStation Worldwide Studios, Hermen Hulst, announced that Ghost of Tsushima has become the PlayStation 4's fastest-selling first-party original game, a feat that was achieved in just under four months. Hulst congratulated developer Sucker Punch Productions and the sentiment was echoed by most of the comments to the tweet. Many fans showed their support by praising the game's many achievements and some even called it their game of the year.
Fans also used the comments in Hulst's tweet to reminisce about some of the other PlayStation 4 exclusives released over the console's main run. Bloodborne, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and Until Dawn were just some of the titles mentioned and the mood of these comments was one of nostalgia, even though the PS4 and its games are going nowhere. In fact, most PS4 exclusives will be playable on the PS5 with the majority allowing save file transfers between systems.
This is a fitting swan song to a console that brought some of the greatest games of the last decade and potentially all time. Though games will continue to come out for the PS4, there will be no more exclusives now that the PS5 is on the market. While this is the natural cycle of console progression, it is still all right to look back at the last generation with some fondness. Besides those titles mentioned earlier, some other PS4 exclusives of note include God of War, Uncharted 4, Spider-Man, and The Last of Us Part II. Ghost of Tsushima was the exclamation point on a track record of excellence and a fitting close to the PlayStation 4 chapter of Sony's console exclusives.
