Waiting outside of the church, holding the boombox up to the window, and saving mermaids were all seen as the biggest romantic gestures of the day and actually set the trend that is now used in rom-coms all the time.

10 Splash (1984)

Starring Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah, Splash is a cute story about a young man who falls in love with a mermaid. When he was only a little boy, Tom Hank's character Allen Bauer was saved by a beautiful mermaid from drowning. He pretty much immediately falls in love with her and always keep her in his mind, until twenty years later when she comes to find him once again. Allen and Madison (the mermaid) begin to fall in love, now as adults, when a weird scientist comes and creates sheer chaos.

9 Say Anything (1989)

Say Anything features a romantic optimist (John Cusack) who somehow manages to win the seemingly unattainable heart of a beautiful straight-A student. The two get along amazingly as they begin to experience their first love with one another. They have their ups and downs, mostly due to the heroine's divorced father who is extremely strict and judgmental, but they seem to always make it through. This movie also has the iconic boombox outside of her window scene that all rom-coms and parodies reference.

8 Some Kind Of Wonderful (1987)

This isn't the typical '80s boy meets girl teen movie. In the '80s, it seemed like films loved to take the direction of nerdy guy or girl somehow winning over the heart of the hot girl or guy in the school. But Some Kind of Wonderful does a bit of a twist.

While the main protagonist in this film is definitely smitten by the popular It-girl of his high school, he tries to win her heart by using advice from his tomboy best friend. But the deeper he gets into advice, the more he realizes that his best friend actually likes him.

7 Can't Buy Me Love (1987)

Can't Buy Me Love stars Patrick Dempsey and Amanda Peterson end up getting into a pretty messy situation. Dempsey's character, Ronald Miller ends up covering for a mistake Cindy makes by paying $1000 in exchange for the façade that the two are dating for one month. Cindy agrees, but as the month progresses she realizes her feelings are also growing. Ronald ends up getting super popular as well, and becomes a jerk for a while, before realizing the error of his ways. This film has another iconic '80s scene when Dempsey arrives at Peterson's house on a lawnmower to whisk her away.

6 Dirty Dancing (1987)

"No one puts Baby in a corner" originated from this '80s classic. Dirty Dancing follows almost-adult Baby as she spends her last summer before the Peace Corps at a dreary resort in the mountains with her parents. But her excitement changes when she sees the resort's dance instructor, Johnny (Patrick Swayze) who insists she become his dance partner. As they dance, they begin to fall in love, much to Baby's father's disapproval, but she is determined to perform with him in the last dance of the summer.

5 Pretty In Pink (1986)

Pretty in Pink follows the story of Andie, a poor girl who is a total outcast in school. Andie lives alone with her father after her mother passed away and doesn't have much to go on about "woman stuff" as she enters that stage of her life. Her best friend, Duckie, has a crush on her, something she simply doesn't reciprocate due to her loud feelings for Blane, one of the rich and popular students at her school. Blane begins to take notice of Andie, but his snobby friends continue to try and get in the way.

4 Breakfast Club

The Breakfast Club is a classic and may be one of the most iconic films on this list. The film dominately takes place all on the same day, as five unlikely high school students, each fitting into a different high school trope, are stuck in school on a Saturday due to detention. At first the brain, athlete, basket case, princess, and criminal all kind of stay away from one another.

But as they start to open up to the idea of having some fun, they also start opening up to one another and realizing that they could be friends if it hadn't been for the stereotypes set by high school standards. Relationships and friendships begin to blossom as unlikely couples form.

3 When Harry Met Sally (1989)

When Harry Met Sally was released in the final year of the 1980s but is still one of the greatest romantic comedies of all time. This movie follows best friends Harry and Sally, who meet due to a road trip they take together to visit their families over the holidays. The two hit it off and have a friendship like any other. Until they sleep together and everything gets weird. Harry and Sally must figure out whether they want to preserve their friendship, or start something new.

2 Sixteen Candles (1984)

Sixteen Candles is another John Hughes classic. Samantha is a nobody, but she totally has her sights set on the coolest, hottest senior in school, Jake. But Jake has a girlfriend, and Samantha is only now celebrating her 16th birthday, which everyone in her family totally forgets about because of her older sister's upcoming wedding. Samantha has no idea how to get Jake's attention, while she has all of the nerdy, eccentric Ted's attention, who eventually helps her get the guy.

1 The Princess Bride (1987)

When looking for romance, action, comedy, and adventure, then look no further because The Princess Bride is by far the greatest movie to come out of the '80s (and is perhaps one of the greatest romances of all time). This fairy tale adventure follows a young woman and her true love, Buttercup and Westley. This movie has become a cult classic — that kiss alone — and really does cover every genre as it seems like it has become the true essence of what a fairy tale is meant to be.
