Despite previous rumors to the contrary, Quentin Tarantino will not be directing a new Star Trek movie. The acclaimed filmmaker has been one of the most talked about possibilities for a new entry in the iconic Star Trek franchise for years now. Known primarily for hits like Pulp Fiction, as well as Kill Bill Volumes 1 & 2, Tarantino’s entire film catalog is considered by many to be essential viewing for any cinephile. Last year’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood took home two Oscars, and the film has often been regarded as a new change in the 57-year old auteur's style. But in addition to the success that Tarantino has consistently managed to achieve with his work, he’s also been the source of endless rumors and self-imposed restrictions.
Several years back Tarantino announced he would be retiring from filmmaking after making his tenth movie. Ever since then, fans have been desperate to know just what sort of stories will finish off the Tarantino canon. At this point, should he stick to his retirement claim, Tarantino has one final film left to deliver to the world and, everyone wants to know just what it is. For some time now, a Star Trek film was a rumored possibility, prompting much discussion among fans of both Star Trek and Tarantino.
Unfortunately for those desperately wishing for a new Star Trek film by Tarantino, confirmation has arrived that it will not happen. The news comes courtesy of Deadline and confirms that Tarantino has dropped out of the project, though the script he had intended to shoot (written by The Revenant screenwriter Mark L. Smith) continues to live on at Paramount. Whether or not it will eventually be turned into the next Star Trek film remains to be seen, but even if it does, Tarantino will not be the director charged with bringing it to the big screen.
As a self-professed Trekkie, Tarantino was arguably one of the best choices that Paramount could have made with regards to giving the franchise some new life. J.J. Abrams had previously provided just that sort of fan energy in his 2009 effort, Star Trek, injecting the entire franchise with a new feel and look. However, as subsequent sequels to that film arrived in 2013 and 2016, it was clear something had to once again change in order to continue to elevate the series. Then, in December of 2017, it was announced Tarantino was attached to direct a new R-rated Star Trek film, prompting much speculation and excitement from fans. Yet, while the idea of an R-rated Star Trek was intriguing to some, there was no shortage of fans who felt Tarantino’s fondness for onscreen violence was incongruous to Star Trek’s central philosophy, as well as its established history.
With news of Tarantino’s exit from a new Star Trek project now made official, more traditional fans will likely be breathing a sigh of relief. Even a large number of Tarantino fans weren’t interested in the filmmaker’s supposed final outing being a film he didn’t write himself. For these reasons, perhaps it’s for the best that Tarantino changed his mind about Star Trek. At least this way, both camps of fans were able to get what they wanted from the situation.
