Cars are finally getting added to Fortnite this week, with the arrival of the Joy Ride update. Epic Games first said that cars would appear in Fortnite starting on July 21st, but it later pushed back the planned update to an unspecified later date to work out some bugs.
Fortnite’s cars are one of the most anticipated updates of Season 3, but it’s not the only major change the battle royale’s third season has introduced. Season 3 is all based around water, the most obvious manifestation of that being the flooding of the map at the end of Season 2, with water levels that have slowly receded to reveal more hidden locations throughout the season. Fortnite Season 3 has had challenges based around DC’s Aquaman and new points of interest showing up in previously submerged parts of the map, the most recently uncovered being the Coral Castle location.
The next big change coming to Fortnite Season 3 is decidedly more focused on solid ground, but it’s the one that’s likely to have the most lasting impact on the game as a whole. As Epic announced on Fortnite’s Twitter account, the Joy Ride update will finally be bringing cars to the game on August 5th, 2020. The tweet doesn’t reveal anything more about the update, but players already have a pretty good idea about what it will include. Posters of cars have popped up around Fortnite’s map in Season 3 showing the Whiplash sports car, Prevalent sedan, Mudflap semi, and Bear pickup truck. Epic shared a slick piece of art for the Whiplash along with its update announcement.
While the addition of cars to Fortnite is highly anticipated, they aren’t the first vehicles to show up in the game. Fortnite has had a wide range of pilotable vehicles before, from the humble shopping cart all the way up to the game-breaking B.R.U.T.E. mech. Depending on how cars are implemented, they could end up having a major impact on how the game is played, particularly since the different types of cars seem like they’ll enable different strategies. The original planned rollout of cars included weekly challenges based on gas tanks, so that’s likely to make an appearance this week as well, giving players a chance to see just how much cars shake up the game.
Epic’s willingness to massively overhaul the way Fortnite is played is one of the most interesting things about the game, and the introduction of cars could be one of the biggest changes yet. Epic is also willing to remove things that just aren’t working, but given the hype around their release, cars may be here for the long haul.
