Braid Anniversary Edition Remasters Indie Classic For Next-Gen

Indie classic Braid is returning in Braid Anniversary Edition, which remasters the game and adds new features to the 2008 hit. Braid was one of the major indie success stories of Xbox Live Arcade, which Microsoft eventually folded into its other online offerings.

It may not look quite as innovative today, but Braid had a massive impact on indie game development when it was released. Braid quickly gained a following among both fans and critics upon release for Xbox 360. It was lauded for its relatively simple to use but ingenious time control mechanics as well as its story. Though it wouldn’t seem obvious from the surface, Braid’s story is one of its strongest points, telling a heart-breaking tale through narrative beats hidden throughout the game. That’s of course on top of its time-bending puzzles, which deserve recognition of their own.

Anyone who missed the original or wants to relive it will get the chance to play Braid in a whole new way soon. A new trailer from Braid publisher Thekla reveals Braid Anniversary Edition, a remaster of the original game with some exciting new content. As the trailer shows, Braid is getting a gorgeous new coat of paint, with remastered hand-drawn graphics. The trailer actually shows the updated version side-by-side with the original to show exactly how much of a visual upgrade the new release will be getting. The new graphics are far more than just a boost in resolution, also adding new animations and reworking the look of some areas of the game. Braid’s sound is getting a similar upgrade.

On top of its more typical updates, Braid Anniversary Edition is getting one even more exciting addition. The game will receive a full audio commentary covering everything from its art and level design to the history of independent games. Its developer says that it will be the most detailed commentary ever for a game, and a great resource for anyone interested in game development. Braid Anniversary Edition doesn’t have an exact release date yet, but it’s planned for a release in early 2021 on current and next-gen Xbox and PlayStation consoles, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Braid is an important part of indie game history, whether or not it’s any particular player’s cup of tea. That makes Braid Anniversary Edition’s release alone a big event, but the fact that it will also give insight into the original game’s development and independent games as a whole make it all the more worth keeping an eye out for.
