The penultimate episode of Agents of SHIELD offered some ominous teases in regards to Fitz’s fate, but the character could still be alive and hiding somewhere in the universe. Fitz’s location has been a well-kept secret throughout season 7 of the ABC series and his presence in Simmons’ flashbacks marked his first appearance on Agents of SHIELD since the season 6 finale.
Agents of SHIELD season 7, episode 11, “Brand New Day” picked up where the last episode left off with Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) and Deke (Jeff Ward) trapped on the Zephyr with their enemy, Nathaniel Malick (Thomas E. Sullivan). Believing that getting what he wanted depended on tracking down Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), Nathaniel tried everything he could think of to get Simmons and Deke to talk. Finally, he used SHIELD’s memory machine to go inside of Simmons’ mind in an effort to unlock the secrets of Fitz’s whereabouts. Though Nathaniel was able to some revealing conversations about why Simmons had to have a memory implant, he didn’t seem to learn anything that would bring him a step closer to finding Fitz and eliminating him.
As for what actually happened to Fitz, the episode seems to suggest that he may have died when he and Simmons talk about “bloodwork” and not having much time. The implication here is that he may be terminally ill. Fitz being dead would explain Simmons’ emotional distress when she briefly recovered her memories during the time loop incident. However, Fitz dying before Agents of SHIELD season 7 even started seems unlikely, given how important he supposedly is.
There has to be a good reason for why it was so integral to their mission that Simmons forget his location. The explanation for the memory implant in this episode is that Fitz wants Simmons to have no memory of what happened so that she could do what needs to be done, but that runs contrary to what was established earlier. Enoch (Joel Stoffer) was under orders to kill anyone (even Simmons) if someone tried to remove it - but killing Simmons would have defeated that purpose. It would also appear that Fitz programmed the implant to erase all her memories of him if anyone got too close to the truth. If Fitz’s location being exposed means defeat, it could be that he’s somewhere in the timeline (either in the past or in the future) still working on the plan to stop the Chronicoms. Fitz may have a hidden base somewhere at an undisclosed point in the timeline that no one would ever expect him to go.
Also, he and Simmons may have done as they discussed and spent some time together before finishing the time machine. An alternate explanation for the “bloodwork” references is that Simmons is pregnant, but there’s no other proof that this is the case. Either way, Fitz and Simmons could have started a family, and that she eventually had to leave them to accompany the SHIELD team on their mission. Remembering the family she left behind could have triggered her previous, heartbroken reaction to getting her memories back.
