Grounded Is Dominating Steam And Twitch On Launch Day

Grounded, Obsidian Entertainment’s new multiplayer survival game, launched in Early Access today, and it’s already topping the charts on Steam and Twitch. Obsidian revealed its pint-sized new property last year, originally scheduling it for a spring 2020 launch.

Known for its expansive RPGs and sharp writing, Obsidian was acquired by Microsoft in 2018, becoming one of the first of many developers to be brought under the Xbox Game Studios umbrella. Last year, Obsidian released The Outer Worlds on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC - with a Nintendo Switch port this year - but it looks like its games will be Xbox console exclusives going forward, starting with Grounded.

Grounded is a very different project from Obsidian’s previous work, but that doesn’t seem to be making players wary of giving it a shot. Obsidian’s latest launched today on PC and Xbox One in Early Access, and it’s getting quite the warm reception. Benji Sales pointed out on Twitter that Grounded was simultaneously the top-selling game in the world on Steam and the second most watched game on Twitch earlier this afternoon. Grounded maxed out at more than 250,000 concurrent viewers on Twitch today, topping League of Legends’ viewer numbers. It’s still listed as Steam’s top seller, beating out the Destroy All Humans! remaster, which also launched today, for the top spot.

As Grounded is still in Early Access, Obsidian still has a lot of work to do on the game, and it likely won’t stay at its launch day peak for long. Steam reviews are generally favorable but many complain of a lack of campaign content, which is unsurprising for a multiplayer-focused game and one that’s still a while from its full release. Obsidian hasn’t announced exactly when it plans to bring Grounded out of Early Access yet, but says that it’s aiming for a full release at some point in 2021. In the meantime, Obsidian has opened up its community Discord to accept feedback from players and shape the game’s development.

Grounded’s success on day one is somewhat of surprise, but it’s not hard to understand. The partnership between a developer as respected as Obsidian and a company as powerful as Microsoft was sure to draw some attention, especially with a game that’s so different from the studio’s past work. The partnership is also bringing Avowed, an open-world RPG similar to Skyrim but based on Obsidian’s Pillars of Eternity franchise to Xbox Series X, meaning Obsidian should get used to the spotlight for the time being.
