Furiosa Is One of the Most Important Characters Charlize Theron Ever Played

Charlize Theron is proud to admit that Furiosa from Mad Max: Fury Road is her most important role. Known for her portrayal of strong and complex female characters, Theron's performance as Furiosa stands out as a hallmark of her career. With news that the role is due to be recast in a Furiosa-based prequel film, Theron's feeling sentimental about the importance of the character.

Furiosa is a war captain under Immortan Joe in Mad Max: Fury Road introduced as an unhappy underling waiting for her moment to break free of his cruelty. She starts out serving Joe but quickly turns against him to free The Five Wives, Joe's female concubines. The role required a great deal of physical activity on Theron’s part and she performed many of her own stunts. Not to mention driving the incredibly massive war rig Furiosa drives throughout the film.

During a Comic-Con@Home Panel dedicated to the actress, Theron discussed Furiosa's impact on pop culture and what the role means to her now, five years later.

I’m incredibly proud of what we pulled off. I’m really proud of that character. Furiosa is definitely one of… I think, the most important characters I have ever played.

Theron felt the role of Furiosa changed her trajectory as an actress, allowing her to pursue stories that were action roles with women at their core. She continues her work in producing and acting in films where she can bring representation to the genre and change the idea of what the female genre is. Theron hopes to help improve the future of cinema by making more complicated and realistic female characters like Furiosa the norm in films.

The role of Furiosa came to Theron after she had already starred in Aeon Flux; a box-office flop that could have been the end of her action movie career thanks to a biased view Hollywood studios take when it comes to female-led action movies. Movie studios have typically viewed male-led action movies as a baseline standard and female-starring action films as a risk. Thankfully, the last few years have pushed back at those outdated perspectives as actresses like Theron, Brie Larson, Gal Gadot, Daisey Ridley anchoring some of the biggest blockbusters of the last decade.

Theron's performance as Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road - and as a super-spy in Atomic Blonde - puts her at the forefront of the push for more inclusivity and diversity in Hollywood. While the Furiosa prequel might not have Theron in the driver's seat, she definitely helped build the war rig.
