According to the popular Myers-Briggs® classification of personality, the ENFJ (Extraverted, Intuitive, Feeling, and Judging) is also known as the Protagonist. People with this personality type are usually leaders, and known for being inspiring and helpful, with strong values and a whole heap of charisma on top.
So when it comes to entertainment, these people want something that falls in line with these traits - and they'll enjoy shows that are surprising, thrilling, and exciting... but that have a positive bent to them, that inspire with their stories, and that feature strong families or communities coming together. So which period pieces will appeal to the ENFJ, and which will put them off?
10 Hate: The Tudors
The Tudors is, unsurprisingly, a series about the Tudors of England - specifically, King Henry VIII and his many (and famously short-lived) wives. It features a star-studded cast and some incredible stories, but it's still not going to appeal to a Protagonist. One of the big issues, of course, is that there's nothing too surprising happening here - everyone knows the story of King Henry's wives, so there's no exciting plot twist. It's also not that inspiring, just a bit sad.
9 Love: Gunpowder
Starring Kit Harington of Game of Thrones fame, Gunpowder is focused on the 'gunpowder plot' to blow up the Palace Of Westminster and kill King James I. While this is also fairly straightforward history, and so lacks the twists and turns that an ENFJ might love, there are other reasons that it will appeal to the Protagonist.
It's the story of rebellious men attempting to take charge, create a rebellion, and force change - and that is exactly what a Protagonist thrives on. ENFJs are going to love the characters and their drive, and that makes it all worthwhile.
8 Hate: Rome
Rome is well-known for being extraordinarily violent, even for a period drama, and features an incredible amount of bloody battles - which, while not too off-putting for an ENFJ, isn't going to appeal to them. The Protagonist wants to see stories of inspiration and leadership, and the infighting and gratuitous violence of this series about the end of the Roman Republic just won't resonate with them at all.
7 Love: Harlots
Harlots tells the story of rival brothels in the 18th century, and is a surprisingly inspiring story - as well as being a female-led one that chooses to tell a different side of history. ENFJs will love seeing something creative and new, as well as love following the many twists and turns of this complicated story. That's not the only reason they'll love this series, though. Harlots is very focused on family, community, and doing the right thing - all qualities that will speak to an ENFJ.
6 Hate: Mad Men
Mad Men may be an incredibly well-known series that deserves critical acclaim (and it has some epic costumes), but this look at the ad men of the '60s isn't going to be the best choice for the Protagonist viewer. It's quite dark, and the main characters (especially Draper himself) lack values and morals, two things that are incredibly important to ENFJs. Seeing these people struggle through lies and manipulations is just going to offputting and difficult for them to watch.
5 Love: The Crown
This may be the ultimate show for Protagonists - what could be more fitting for these leaders than the ultimate leader: the Queen of England? The Crown takes viewers through the reign of the present Queen, with stunning costumes, a brilliant cast, and an incredible story.
Inspiring, powerful, and with the ability to teach viewers a thing or two they didn't know about the history of England's monarch, The Crown will appeal to every ENFJ.
4 Hate: Peaky Blinders
While Peaky Blinders is a critically acclaimed series, it simply won't suit the ENFJ. This series about the gangs of the early 1900s is packed with violence, darkness, more violence, and (of course) immoral criminals out for themselves. Combined, this is exactly what the inspiration-seeking ENFJ would be looking to avoid watching, not seek out.
3 Love: Downton Abbey
Downton Abbey is a wildly popular drama, followed by a film, and ENFJs will absolutely understand why. The show follows the Crawley family through the early twentieth century, along with their household servants, and it has everything to inspire and please an ENFJ. Family and community are front and center, inspirational stories (including those of servants and family members becoming better people and rising to new social heights), and the preservation of values through changing times... it's perfect for Protagonists.
2 Hate: Reign
Reign is loosely based on the real-life stories of Mary, Queen of Scots in the French court, but there is a lot about this drama that will put Protagonists off. For one thing, the story delves into the supernatural, even to the extent of becoming absurd, and that's not going to sit well with ENFJs looking for down to earth inspiration, rather than fantasy. They might enjoy the creative twist, of course, but it's far more likely that this is just going to seem ridiculous to this personality type.
1 Love: Pride And Prejudice
Finally, where would period drama fans be without Pride and Prejudice? Based on the Jane Austen novel, this is a story of charisma, challenges to personal values, judgment (and changes in initial judgment), and strong characters. There's little about this that a Protagonist wouldn't enjoy! There may not be any huge inspirational leaps here, but an ENFJ will understand that there is something even more important going on with internal changes.
