When Gossip Girl was on, between 2007 and 2012, it brought its fair share of drama and then some. From the ups and downs of relationships between friends, significant others, and families members to scheming, partying, fighting, and receiving blasts from an anonymous blogger, this teen drama was a true hit.
However, it wasn’t perfect, as no TV show is: There were plot points that seemed to be brushed over and left in the dust, as well as moments that just seemed to drag on and on, with no end in sight. That being said, here are 5 storylines that deserved more attention and five that got too much screen time.
10 Deserved More: Chuck Searching For His Mother
It may have seemed like Chuck Bass had it all, but what he really wanted was for his father to love him, acknowledge him and be proud of him. However, more hurt came in a storyline involving his mother.
He had always thought she had passed away, but when a woman, Elizabeth Fisher a.k.a. Evelyn Bass, showed up, he wasn’t sure. She said she was just one of Bart's lovers, then she said that she wanted Chuck to think she was dead. Further complications came about, due to Jack’s and Diana Payne’s versions of the story. And in the end, she left and was never seen again, which was weird and sad.
9 Too Much: Ivy Getting With Rufus
Ivy Dickens coming to town and lying was another dramatic moment on this show, and it got worse: After she hurt, lied to and took from the van der Woodsens, she got with Rufus. They were an item, they lived together, and even Dan walked in on them in the bedroom!
Even if Rufus and Lily weren’t meant to be as a couple, they still loved each other. So the fact that he would become romantically involved with someone like that just did not make sense.
8 Deserved More: Talks About Forgiveness
Think about all the backstabbing that took place on the Upper East Side. Friends and family members were constantly doing unforgivable things, yet this main group remained close through the years, and some of them even married one another.
While the themes of loyalty were inspiring, some more deep conversations could have been shown. For instance, how did Serena decide to trust Dan again, after he was Gossip Girl, and why would they have wanted Georgina at their wedding, after what she did to them?
7 Too Much: Serena Dating Steven/Nate Dating Sage
These main characters dated so many different people throughout this story, for better or for worse. One of Serena’s boyfriends was Steven Spence, and her friends discovered her living a double life with this man, after she vanished.
He also had a teenage daughter, and even though she was annoying and bratty, Nate ended up dating her! These couples were not good fits, and while everyone makes relationship mistakes, this whole storyline was not the best.
6 Deserved More: Juliet Trying To Bring Serena Down
Through a complicated series of events (Remember when Lily van der Woodsen sent an innocent man to prison?), a side character named Juliet Sharp tried to take down Serena. She also recruited Vanessa and Jenny to help her.
It made sense that Juliet would want revenge, though there were some scenes that were a bit much and were taken too far. Still, the fact that Vanessa and Jenny would stoop to these levels and then just vanish completely… It felt like there were loose ends that needed typing up some more.
5 Too Much: Finding Out Lily & Rufus Had A Son
As mentioned, Lily and Rufus loved each other, and they tried to make their relationship work more than once. It seemed forced to say they had actually had a child together, though, years ago. This kid came out of nowhere, he lied about his identity, he started dating Vanessa, and then, like many other characters on this show, he just disappeared again!
4 Deserved More: Jenny, Post-Downward Spiral
Jenny Humphrey was kicked out of New York after making some pretty big mistakes, and she was going through a really rough time in life. It was good that she went to find herself and live with her mother.
However, she wasn’t really shown again until the finale. And while many fans were into this character, her revival deserved some screen time; she had been a rebellious teen, but she was a good girl, deep down. Therefore, it would have been nice to see her redemption story.
3 Too Much: Georgina Telling Dan He Was The Father Of Her Baby
Georgina Sparks did some crazy things in her life, such as telling Dan that he was the father of her child. While this selfish and deceptive act was on-brand for her, it was random, and then it was over as quickly as it began.
2 Deserved More: How The Couples Shown At The End Got Together
Here is another aspect of the finale that could have used some more explaining: Of course, there are questions regarding how Chuck and Blair and Serena and Dan decided to finally tie the knots, after years of challenges. That could be chalked up to true love, though.
But at Serena and Dan’s wedding, there were some other couples present. One was Jack and Georgina, and maybe these two deserved each other. It just was a bit shocking that they were together/invited at all. Then, there was Lily and William: did she forgive him after all his lies about her sickness and Ivy?
1 Too Much: Dan Hooking Up With A Teacher
Finally, another relationship that got too much screen time was the one between Dan and his teacher, Rachel Carr. Honestly, this also felt forced and like it was trying to bring the drama in a spicy way, when really it was just uncomfortable and unnecessary.
