Avatar's Cabbage Man Ready To Return In Netflix's Last Airbender Show

Avatar: The Last Airbender's fan favorite cabbage merchant is ready to return for the Netflix live-action series, should the opportunity arise. The beloved animated series recently saw a resurgence in popularity after being added to Netflix, though truthfully the fan base for Avatar has never truly gone away. There was one previous attempt to translate Avatar into live-action, 2010's feature film The Last Airbender, but fans rejected it almost immediately for a myriad of reasons ranging from the poor world-building to the mispronunciation of several characters' names. Avatar's next live-action venture will be a streaming series with Netflix, which will also be made with the help of the show's original creators.

Avatar featured many memorable characters over the course of its three-season run, but the most surprising one is a man who doesn't actually have a name. The cabbage merchant frequently appears at various points on Aang and his friends' journey, and he's always with his trusty cabbage stand. The running gag is that regardless of where they are (and it's always somewhere new), the Gaang will somehow destroy the cabbage stand and the merchant will yell some variation of "My cabbages!" The character was supposed to be a one-off joke, but fans took to him so much the writers kept bringing him back, and he even was referenced in the spin-off series The Legend of Korra.

With the Avatar Netflix series on the horizon, fans are curious about what parts of the original show will carry over into this new iteration. It would make sense to include the cabbage merchant in some form, even as just an Easter egg for fans. Should producers Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko decide to bring him back, voice actor James Sie is ready. While speaking to Slate for an oral history of the cabbage merchant, Sie playfully said, "Of course, now I’m more at the age of what the cabbage merchant was then. I will cultivate that little beard if they need me to. And because my face is quite expressive, I’m perfect for a live-action version of an animated show. I’m ready."

The live-action Avatar series is still in the early stages of development, so it's unclear exactly how faithful it will be to the original. With DiMartino and Konietzko on board, fans are expecting a better adaptation than The Last Airbender proved to be. Still, there are bound to be some changes simply because of the different mediums, as well as the possibility to expand certain storylines.

All of that being said, to not include the cabbage merchant would be a disappointment. This is an example of a character who, despite having no defining feature beyond his love of cabbages, stood out enough to fans to become one of the best running gags on the show. Even if Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender is unable to bring him back multiple times, they can still found a way to reference him at least once. After all, the man himself is game.
