Mark Hamill Shares His Touching Farewell Letter From The Skywalker Saga Box Set

Actor Mark Hamill says farewell to his time with Star Wars via a heartfelt letter included in copies of The Skywalker Saga boxed set. Regardless of its mixed critical reception, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker marked the end of an era for the saga. The story of Luke Skywalker is over, with the mantle of "Skywalker," and the fate of the Jedi passed on to Rey, the unassuming scavenger girl from Jakku who toppled the First Order and their secret leader, Emperor Palpatine. Whatever the future holds for Star Wars, the arc of Luke and his rise from a humble farmhand to a hero of the revolution and a symbol of hope for a divided galaxy has reached its natural conclusion.

To mark the end of the Star Wars story as we know it, Disney is releasing The Skywalker Saga, a massive boxed set consisting of all nine mainline Star Wars movies in one complete package. In addition to a suite of bonus features and 4k picture on the cutting-edge UHD Blu-rays, the massive set also includes a more personal touch from none other than Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill.

Each copy of The Skywalker Saga box contains a letter from Hamill, addressed to the fans. In the brief message, which the actor shared to Twitter, Hamill pays tribute to Carrie Fisher and George Lucas by taking readers back to the earliest days of the Star Wars saga. Back then, Hamill, Carrie, and Harrison Ford were first getting ready to embark on an adventure that would go on to be bigger and more profound than anybody could have predicted at the time.

It's hard to imagine Star Wars will ever truly end. When the original trilogy first concluded with the release of Return of the Jedi, Star Wars survived through books, comics, video games, and other forms of storytelling. Likewise, when the prequel trilogy came to a close with Revenge of the Sith, Star Wars continued on with games like The Force Unleashed and the legendary animated series, The Clone Wars.

Now that Episode IX has come and gone, the universe of Star Wars seems bigger than ever before. Pending any COVID-19 intervention, season 2 of The Mandalorian is expected to launch before the end of 2020, with a show based on Obi-Wan Kenobi coming to Disney+ sometime afterward. The Skywalker Saga has come to an end, but Star Wars will continue, minor bumps in the road notwithstanding. Hamill's letter celebrates that fact, welcoming the addition of new storytellers to the playground of imagination created by George Lucas all those years ago.
