Harry Potter: The Worst Thing About Each Ministry Official, Ranked

The Ministry Of Magic was never a good place, even from the first time we were ever introduced to the Wizarding World. Not unlike the real world, it was full of incompetent politicians and ended up becoming overrun with corruption. The motives of the government took priority over what was best for its people, and we were introduced to a variety of figures within who were each easy to hate in their own way.

We’ve ranked the worst thing about each of the main Ministry officials, from minor employees to the Minister For Magic himself.

9 Pius Thicknesse: Acted Under The Imperius Curse

He might have done some truly terrible things, but we can’t stay mad at Pius Thicknesse. He looks and sounds evil, and he is the man in power at the Ministry when Voldemort beings to take over.

However, everything he does is due to the power of the imperius curse he is under.

8 Arthur Weasley: Didn’t Understand Anything About His Job

Arthur Weasley was a lovely man and we were all very happy to see him survive Nagini’s attack. However, his role at the Ministry was his longstanding position as the head of the Misuse Of Muggle Artifacts.

You’d think they might try to bring a muggle-born wizard in for this role, really, because Arthur Weasley seems to have no grasp of the function of any muggle artifacts at all, so he can’t exactly be doing a good job.

7 Rufus Scrimgeour: Was Incompetent

His affiliations were completely righteous. Scrimgeour spent his life fighting against dark magic, and when he made it to Minster For Magic, he continued his fight.

However, he was simply incompetent in his role. He admitted Voldemort was back, but still pretended that there was no concern for safety. He was eventually killed (a reflection of his own false claims of safety), but his incompetence led to the loss of lives.

6 Barty Crouch Sr: Made The Triwizard Tournament Go Ahead

While his son was a known Death Eater, Barty Crouch Sr was a good-hearted wizard. He was one the head of the Department Of Magical Law Enforcement but ended up as the head of the Department Of International Magical Cooperation.

In his role, he spearheaded the Triwizard Tournament. While the tournament was built around a ‘binding magical contract’, he made no real effort to stop it going ahead with a participant who was too young. This indirectly helped Voldemort return, but Crouch was dead by then.

5 Percy Weasley: Betrayed His Family

The only member of the Weasley family not to have their trademark warmth and kindness was Percy. He was overly ambitious and betrayed his family to work for the Ministry, just as it was at its peak of Voldemort denial.

He was the Junior Assistant To The Minister For Magic for a long time, but eventually saw the corruption of his beloved government and returned to his family.

4 Walden Macnair: Executed Buckbeak

The relevance of Macnair was something JK Rowling kept rather subtle, despite his ultimate importance.

He was first introduced as a Ministry executioner, being the one to kill Buckbeak (and then not kill him after some time travel interference). However, listen carefully as Voldemort lists his Death Eaters in The Goblet Of Fire, and you’ll see that Macnair was in the graveyard.

3 Corban Yaxley: Worked For Voldemort

One of the many Ministry officials who actually secretly worked for Lord Voldemort was Corban Yaxley. He was the one who commanded that Reg Cattermole stop the never-ending rain in his office.

He was then promoted to Head Of Magical Law Enforcement after Voldemort’s rise and took part in the Battle of Hogwarts. It is unclear whether or not he survived, however.

2 Cornelius Fudge: Failed To Accept Voldemort’s Return

While Fudge was probably a good man deep down, his incompetence, arrogant and ability to face facts is one of the biggest factors in the deaths of hundreds.

Despite proof staring him in the face, Fudge refused to accept that Voldemort had returned at the end of The Goblet Of Fire. He decided to start a smear campaign against Harry instead of preparing for war, and it was this lack of preparation that meant the Ministry was so early overcome by Voldemort.

1 Dolores Umbridge: Was Pure Evil

Everything about Dolores Umbridge leads to her being one of the most hateable characters in the history of cinema. Her terrible arrogance, snobbish voice and fake-kindness all combine to make her repulsive, while her literal torture of her students, open hatred of certain ‘half-breed’ species and anti-muggle attitudes just cement the idea that she is the worst of the worst.

She might not have supported Voldemort upon his return, but she certainly didn’t do a lot to oppose him.
